Ah, What The Hell!?!

I was so excited to see the solicit image for the cover to X-Men Legacy #234.  It features my girl Rogue and is not only beautiful and awesome, but is a far cry from the costume bullshit she’s been putting up with lately.  Unfortunately however, my joy was short lived, because I then went to read the accompanying solicit text.

Before I post the solicit text let’s all agree on what this cover is suggesting.  To me, this cover is Rogue saying (both with her hand gesture and her expression), effectively “Bring it on.  I am a badass and I will take on all comers.” Something to that effect.  I assume because she is gaining control of her powers and becoming an even more powerful superhero (one of the most powerful) this is her, showing off a bit.  I love it.  And then here’s the solicit text for the issue (and if you’re not familiar with Rogue, until recently she was unable to touch another human being flesh to flesh without injuring or killing them).

Solicit For X-Men Legacy #234: Rogue has survived a lot in her day, but can she survive the men warring for her heart? It’s not the first time several men have courted the Southern Belle, but it is the first time she can actually do anything about it.  Who will she chose? You’ll be shocked!

Okay, so now we have a problem.  Because the cover suggests ‘bring it on – and I’ll take on all comers’ and now we find out that the issue is about Rogue’s romantic and sexual relationships…which puts a whole other super icky porno spin on the cover.  I mean maybe I’ve just seen way too much porn in my life and so I’m going to a place that not everyone will go to (I certainly hope that’s the case) but I’m hard pressed to see what else this cover is supposed to suggest than ‘open for business boys.’  Which is just…icky.

So I’m really disappointed in this.  I just don’t know how there aren’t people in some kind of quality control position at Marvel who can look up and go, “Guys…we’ve got a problem…”

OH sigh, they get so close to being, well, decent and then they go off on something like that.

My feelings exactly. One step forward, one and a half back. Oy.

That’s extremely disappointing. I don’t read X-Men to watch Rogue play Bachlorette, I read it to watch her be awesome and beat people up.

megansk: Yeah, I don’t mind some soap opera drama and relationship stories in my comics, but not when my first thought when combining image and text is Gangbang. Bad. Bad. Bad.

‘Open for business boys’… Lol, hilarious!! I do agree the cover is beautiful but
I don’t think Carey would do that to Rogue, he loves her as much as we do. I just hope shes by herself for a while to be her own woman. Plus, I think it might be a filler issue because it’s coming out around the time X-Men: Seconding Coming starts.

bonezgiovanni: Carey has definitely been doing right by her, I just wish we could get the costume choices/art and now apparently the marketing department solicit text to match up with HIS respect for the character.

I would bet good money that the answer to the solicit texts “Who will she choose? You’ll be shocked” is her choosing nobody – or rather herself. Which I’m fine with, as I agree with you, best for her to adjust to this new period in her life before jumping into anything with someone specific.

this cover has been haunting me lately, making me feel uneasy whenever i see it. i never thought it was ever a “bring it on!” sorta thing — i always thought it was an awkwardly sexual image. i think what makes it so bad are sleepy bedroom eyes and the boobs… especially the boobs. they’re over-highlighted by the colorist to express an intense bulge, and the penciler took the time to clearly emphasize the way they pull at the fabric on the sides, making the end product, i dunno, just really trashy and overtly sexual in a very unnecessary way. as over sexed fan art it would be whatever, but as a cover that the company is using to represent the series, it just strikes me as really inappropriate.

Nick: You’re definitely not wrong. I can see how you would get a sexual vibe off it it, even without the solicit text, I didn’t but I can totally see it. And of course once I read the text I can’t see anything but. I agree that Rogue’s breast is kind of insanely highlighted…I guess I was just so excited to see the costume zipped up that I felt almost grateful. Talk about setting the bar low!

Did you see the preview pages for the Legacy…I think it’s #233? Rogue is just falling out of her uniform on every single preview page…I don’t know where these guys get off thinking this is okay. I wanted to post about it…but honestly, I feel totally beat down…at least temporarily, they have won.
