Sometimes it’s good to be wrong.

It’s really late notice, but if you happen to live in Utah now’s your big chance to see Anis Mojgani perform.  It’s well worth the time I assure you.

Here are the details, or…just use these:

Friday, March 20, 7:30pm

Utah State University
Taggart Student Center Ballroom
Logan, Utah 84321

Tickets are $5 in advance, $7 at the door

Note: Please Utah and people of Utah, take no offense.  All is said in love.  I lived in Utah for years, and my family all still live there.  But trust me Utah, you usually don’t get things as awesome as Anis Mojgani.

so i get it now.

all the hype about Tao Lin.

i just finished #28 – You Are A Little Bit Happier Than I Am. Tao Lin. Poetry Collection. 3.5 stars

this poetry is powerful and unique stuff. he writes in a very distinctive voice (much like his novel Eeeee Eeee Eee) but it worked powerfully for me here, where in his novel i had trouble connecting, here the beautiful language was enough and i didn’t feel let down for not being able to connect, that didn’t seem to be the point. perhaps that isn’t the point for Lin in his novel either, but unfortunately it is something i do look for. i’ll have to try a short fiction collection of Lin’s next and see if that works for me as his poetry did.

other than reading (or hearing) my friend Anis Mojgani’s work i don’t think i’ve been as satisfied with a poetic voice as i was with Lin’s since i first discovered Bukowski. not that i am comparing them, they couldn’t be more different except for in their power. a few favorites from You Are A Little Bit Happier Than I Am: Some of My Happiest Moments In Life Occur On AOL Instant Messenger; Things I Wanted To Do Today; I Want To Start A Band; Pessimism? Or Robotics?; It’ll Get Different; I Honestly Do Not Know Who This Poem Is Directed At But I Still Somehow Wrote It With Conviction; and Things You Have Emailed Me.

if you like poetry, or feel like trying some out, i would highly recommend Lin’s book. interesting stuff.

to vote for Anis Mojgani on famecast this week…

the title of this post is actually the title of one of Anis’ lighter pieces, and one of my favorites.  i write this post for two reasons, 1) because Anis is the best spoken word poet out there and he needs all the support i can rally for him over on Famecast, and 2) because just having Anis’ name on my blog raises my blog views.  at least once a day (more like ten times a day) someone comes to this blog becuase they use the search term “anis mojgani”.  he is IT my friends.  and you should check him out, so you can see what IT is all about.

Anis is currently in the final five over on Famecast (and up for the 10k first prize – a hell of a lot of cash for a poet).  please help him get it, not only because he deserves it, but because you will be better for going to Famecast today and listening to Anis’ words.  i actually defy you to go there and listen and NOT be moved.  i’m not sure it’s possible.  even if you don’t think you like spoken word…give Anis a try.  what he does is not just poetry, it’s not just spoken word, it’s not JUST anything, and the shit can change your life, or at least how you think about your life.

all five poets in the finals are talented, but Anis is it.  please, go check him out and VOTE!

here’s what to do…

go here:  http://famecast.com/login.php?login=1

create an account (or log in if you already have an account) and check out the spoken word poets (stage 9).  and vote for Anis.  that is all.

a great thanks to all of you that read my post about Anis last week and voted for him on famecast.  thanks to you even if you didn’t read my post, but voted anyway.  Anis has made it to the top 5…as it should be.  so if you helped out, now is the time to pat yourselves on the back…

okay, it is so great that i am opening my blog with this.  i cannot think of a more positive or inspiring thing then to open things up with a post about Anis, the fact that i am shamelessly plugging him should be ignored.  i’ve been holding onto a book review i recently wrote because i didn’t want such a negative post to be the first thing i launched out there into the universe, so it is fitting that instead it should be about Anis…onto shameless plug:

Anis is competing on famecast (stage 9) for the slam poetry finals.  it is down to the top 10 and voting for the top 5 finalists ends tomorrow at noon (wednesday 7/18/07).  there are some really talented slam poets in the top 10 right now, one in particular i really think has a great piece posted, but with not disrespect intended to any of those fine artists, Anis blows them out of the water.  Anis has a quality and style and a perspective and opinion that just sings.  the world opens up when you really listen to what Anis has to say and it seems like the whole world can just be a better place than it is right now.  more important than that, listening to Anis makes ME want to be a better person…a better artist…just better.

i once said that ‘Anis is the catalyst for every artist’.  this was my best and most accurate statement in life thus far (seriously).  there is something about Anis that when you come into contact with him and with his work, you just want to go out and conquer the world in the name of all things good, possibly while riding a pony.  okay, maybe that last bit is just me.

so let Anis inspire you today…register at famecast…it takes only two minutes…and then listen to his new piece “Here Am I” and vote for Anis.  tomorrow (wednesday 7/18/o7) is the last day to vote, so don’t drag your damn feet!

last i checked, with the votes he has he will not make it to the top 5 – he needs to make it to the top 5 – there is no way this is even a legitimate competition if he doesn’t make the top 5 – so let’s make it happen.

if you have already voted in a previous round it is even easier to vote again, because you don’t have to re-register – just log-in and vote.
