This is an illustration I did ages ago for Illustration Friday, the word was "primative"...it seemed fitting somehow for today's post. :)

I cannot believe it has been three years!

Thanks to all of you who have made this venture so successful, both those of you who have been there from the very humble beginnings to those of you who helped to make this blog such a great success over the last year.  I didn’t have time to do a fun thank you cartoon like last year, but I’ve been pretty busy so I hope you’ll understand.

We fell just shy of my goal of 500,000 hits, but we got more than 300,000 hits this past year alone…so if you do the math on that you can see that we are building things in a huge way.  Around this time last year the blog was lucky to get 500 hits in a day, and generally averaged around the 300 mark.  Now we average around 1,000 hits a day and 1,500 is a pretty good day.  So yeah, more than tripling readership in a year is no small thing and I owe that to all of you.

I’ve got a couple really fun posts coming up.  This week, in honor of the anniversary and to head into year four with a bang I’ll be posting a “15 Covers I Wish I’d Included” post which is a follow up to the wildly popular “100 Favorite Comic Covers” of last year.  Next week, in honor of the San Diego Comic Con I’ll be doing my “52 Favorite Covers Of The Last Year” and for those of you sick of comics, in August I’ll launch a series of posts that pit my two favorite cities, LA and NYC, against each other.

So THANK YOU for reading and commenting and stay tuned…there’s much fun to come!

So after a very long year of revision to my novel, I can now say that I am officially agented by the truly excellent Steven Malk of Writer’s House.  Additionally, my novel THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING is on submission to publishers right now.  We’re aiming for the stars with some really HUGE publishers…so it will take some crazy luck and some people falling in love to get a sale, but I’m optimistic it can happen as I really love my book thanks to all the time and effort Steve and I put into it over the last year.

So yeah, I’ve been keeping things WAY under wraps on the book and here we are…now you know why…because the title is AWESOME.  :)

The Girl Who Would Be King is a YA (young adult) novel about two teenage girls with superpowers.  They’re concerned with all the normal teen things like finding themselves and falling in love but they’re also busy learning about their superpowers, and you know…trying to kill each other.

Anyway, the process could be fast or slow at this point.  Selling a book can take from a day to never.  Let’s all hope it’s closer to the former than the latter.

Thanks everyone for your support and encouragement.  Let’s become HUGE so you can be all “I was a fan of Kelly and 1979 Semi-Finalist when she was NOBODY…a broke ass nobody!”

So…that’s what’s been going on with me.  You?

I finally bit the bullet and did some business cards.  Nothing too serious, just a fun (read: cheap) card from the good people at MOO with some contact information and a little sketch.  Something I could hand out in case I’m ever again in one of those situations where it’s appropriate (and so I don’t have to spend 15 hours creating hand drawn cards like last time).  My future business card is a gorgeous letterpress card with a new logo that will cost a fortune and be too valuable to actually give out.  Come to momma future business card!

I did remove my phone number in case any of you perverts get any weird ideas about giving me a call.  :)

That’s right, it’s finally here dear readers, the totally not long awaited debut of my website 1979 Semi-Finalist.

Please check it out and let me know what you think.  You may have noticed that I removed some pages on the blog but if you go to the website I’ve replaced the material there.  In addition to a detailed bibliography and excerpts from several stories (as well as I Hate The French still available in its entirety) there’s also a bio, contact information, a news & development section, and artwork.

If you ever liked my Rabid Lamb comic strip, or wanted to like it but missed it or found it hard to navigate, there’s a nice easy to use slideshow full of “The Best Of Rabid Lamb”.

Enjoy!

I know what I want for my birthday this year.  Are you ready?  Are you listening?  Is this thing on?!

BATMAN!!!!!!!

Here is where you can buy it for me…since I’m sure that is your next question.  That is all.  Please return to your lives.

That’s right, AMC has officially picked up The Walking Dead, the Frank Darabont adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s fantastic apocalyptic zombie comic book – The Walking Dead.  I’m officially WAY too excited about this.  I’m going to need to bring my expectations down to realistic levels.

In case you missed it (and I’m totally talking to you Darabont!) check out my casting picks from a couple months ago.

I know you’re all sitting at your computers hitting refresh over and over and going, “OMG. Where is Sketch-A-Day?!?!” (except nobody is doing that) so I’m here to tell you that Sketch-A-Day is dead.  After a brutal one week trial period, I’m giving up and evolving it into something that I hope will work better…SKETCH-A-WEEK!

The reason for the change is primarily that I just don’t like broadcasting my ineptitude as an artist so publicly…and on a daily basis at that.  However, the whole point of the experiement, was to be educational (for me) and about making sure that I was doing at least a little drawing every day and to possibly slightly entertain you, my dear readers.  So the new plan is this…I will continue to sketch for no more than an hour every day (Monday – Friday) and I will post only one of the sketches from that week…on Fridays.

Of course if in one week there are several good sketches I’ll consider posting those…but that seems unlikely given last weeks output.  :)

So Adam has been drawing a lot lately, especially on his tablet, and I’ve been envious.  It’s no secret that drawing has taken a back (WAY back) seat for me over the last year as my novel has become my primary focus and writing in general (for CSBG, this blog, and a handful of other things) has become my secondary focus…but I miss drawing.  And I’ve been trying to figure out a way to get it back into my life in a practical and productive way that won’t eat up all my time.

Adam’s recent AWESOME drawing of us has inspired me to get serious about it.  Oh, um…NSFW?  Too late?

Anyone who knows us knows that Adam has been (wisely) very kind to me and as usual very unkind to himself in this depiction – but I love it anyway.  I wish I was that cute…in cartoon form…or any form!

Anyway, the awesomeness of Adam’s drawing has inspired me to try a new blog project that will both get me drawing again and also help me to work on my new tablet skills.  So the new Sketch-A-Day feature will be just that, a sketch every day (Monday through Friday) posted on the blog and created either on the tablet or by hand in a minimum of 10 minutes and a maximum 60 minutes (I’ll be focusing on the tablet to see if I can hone my skills on it, but there will be some traditional non-tablet work done as well).  I’ll try my best not to draw only sexy curvy girls, as that is pretty much my default setting when I sketch…but no promises.*

So we’ll see how it goes. The Sketch-A-Day posts will start on Monday, February 1st.  See you then!

* It’s important to note up front that NOTHING I do will look as good as what Adam has done here.  For two simple reasons…1) Adam has always been and will always be a far better and more naturally talented cartoonist that I am and 2) Adam took WAY more than an hour to do this.  So lower your expectations already!
