Some CBR Reviews from this week:

Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Season 9 #3

“Buffy The Vampire Slayer” is one of the best transitions from other media to comics that I’ve had the pleasure of reading, and it’s largely thanks to a stable of brilliant writers, artists, and creators that clearly love the characters and world as much as fans do. This most recent iteration of Buffy in the form of “Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season 9” is no exception and has been delivering an amazing new series these last few months…”

Princeless #1

“The new series “Princeless” from talented newcomers Jeremy Whitley and M. Goodwin and independent publisher Action Lab is a much needed breath of fresh air on the comics scene.

“Princeless” is the story of a young princess named Adrienne being kept by her parents in a tower guarded by a dragon, so that a worthy prince might rescue her (and then marry her, I suppose). Adrienne is unimpressed both with this plan and with the gents who have tried (and failed) to rescue her. After a last failed attempt, Adrienne escapes on her own, commandeers her dragon guardian, puts on some left-behind armor, and heads off to rescue her five similarly trapped sisters…”

A review of Rachel Rising #3 to follow shortly I hope!

There’s a new She Has No Head! up on Comics Should Be Good.

I really like this piece today as it’s a chance to talk a little bit about a lot of great female positive ongoings we seem to have in comics right now.  Head on over to check it out.  And here’s an image, which will allow you to cheat…

““Buffy The Vampire Slayer” is a hard comic for me to review, as I have to struggle to keep the emotionally invested fangirl parts of me balanced with the objective reviewer parts. Fortunately, “Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Season 9” #1 is a very good comic, so my job is made easy…”

“The “Angel” series (and related books) at IDW were, for the most part, good and interesting books with compelling stories and solid creative teams, but somehow it feels comforting to have everything that goes with “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” safely housed under one publishing roof, Dark Horse. Already “Angel & Faith” feels more tightly tied to “Season 8” of “Buffy The Vampire Slayer” and I suspect all will be the better for it in the long run as well…”

Another great cover for the Hellboy: The Fury series.  This cover for Hellboy: The Fury #3 by Mike Mignola and Dave Stewart is just awesome…like the two before them.  Good work gents!

Though I continued to read the regular “season eight” Buffy comics even when they annoyed me this past year, I’d fallen away from the more intense (and frequently confusing for me) Angel stuff.  It’s entirely possible that that’s my fault and that I just wasn’t paying enough attention – there was a lot going on in some of those books.  However drama between Willingham and Whedon’s people over all the Twilight nonsense (which I ended up hating anyway) didn’t help restore a lot of faith in what was going on in the books.  All that to say that I wasn’t really intending to pick up Angel & Faith forthcoming from Dark Horse.  Until today. Until I realized Rebekah Isaacs is going to be drawing it.

And now?  I’m so in motherfuckers.

If you’re a fan of Isaacs, check out the interview at the link where writer Christos Gage tells a pretty great story about working with Isaacs (the rest of the interview is good too).

Also, check out the pieces I wrote on She Has No Head! about Isaac’s work on the miniseries DV8: Gods & Monsters – including a Brian Wood interview –  here, here, and here.  Sue, Maddy, and I have also talked about Isaacs and about her current series Magus on the 3 Chicks Review Comics podcast – episode #04 and episode #010.

And here, so you know can know in a moment what you’ve been missing, is my all-time favorite page of Isaac’s from DV8: Gods & Monsters:

Awesome.
