#89 ~ Rabid Lamb Comics

This movie had plotholes big enough to drive mack trucks through them, but it was really the lights issue that bothered me most.  They’re hiding out in an attic for a long time (like weeks – though we get no sense that it has been that long) and the entire freaking time they have the lights on…if you are hiding from vampires – vampires that have been portrayed as the ultimate hunters and badasses no less – would you really keep the attic lights on for two plus weeks, and keep peeking out of a pulled back piece of kraft paper taped over a window?  No, you would not.  Also, these vampires are so smart…why did they not cut off the back-up/generator power to the town after the cut the regular power.  And does back-up/generator power really power an entire town for 30 days?  It was very frustating for me.

Even though the movie was chock full of holes in logic, it was quite pretty, from Josh Hartnett right on down to the images of bloody massacre on snow (I know that doesn’t really sound beautiful – but from an artistic perspective it was kind of stunning).  Overall it was a very pretty movie, and since I’m a scaredy cat there were times that I was into it and scared, but it was pretty disappointing – mostly because it could have been SO awesome – and it just fell really really short.  It’s probably 2 1/2 stars for me, which means I have to pick between 2 stars and 3 stars on netflix.  Ah, the half star conundrum continues…

Mmm vampires…maybe they were blinded by the light? I kid, I kid. Still, this looked visually pleasing. I’ve read the graphic novels, and they definitely have their own look to them. But dumb vampires, more so than dumb people, make me sad.

I thought I was the only one who thought this movie was “pretty”. Thanks. Though Hartnett’s acting evokes a young Keanu, I was amused by this film too. Wait… this isn’t “Dude, He’s the Stallion”. Wait… where am I?

How about the fact that these so-called “vampires” with their supersonic sense of smell, hearing, etc, whatever, couldn’t find a small group of people couped up in one room in this tiny town for 30 days. Ludicrous.

And the passage of time in this film was horrible. It felt like one night. One long, boring night.

i’d like to comment that your comics have looked a little different with the way you’ve stylized them – did you do this on purpose or is it just a progression? I like it!

also i still want to see this movie – regardless of the bad reviews.

Paul: I’m sure in this case the graphic novel is FAR superior, so you will probably be pretty disappointed, but it’s a fun brainless time…sort of…

Kevin: if Hartnett keeps turning in these wooden and “overly earnest” (I stole that from Adam) performances it’s going to get harder and harder for me to defend him…and please do come back…always happy to pick up Adam’s stragglers…

jamminjabber: Yeah, that would be one of the giant plotholes. Like when they’re running across the roof, separated by tar and wood, sure they can’t smell, hear, sense, etc., ten people just below them. Sure. Sure.

The passage of time was out of control bad. It’s like “Day One: we butcher the entire town and everyone hunkers down” Cut to Day 14 and absolutely nothing else has happened. It was terrible. But I still didn’t totally hate it…although the more I talk about it the more I’m leaning towards 2 stars on Netflix.

K: Excellent comment. I HAVE been trying to push myself in a more cartoony fashion, which was always the goal of the strip, but I felt like it hadn’t been moving forward and so I did a lot of sketching this weekend to try to push it in that direction. I liked what came of the sketching (especially today’s comic) but it’s not there yet, so I think I’m going to really focus one of these weekends and premiere a “Rabid Lamb Revamped” with an “all new cartoony style!” so stay tuned…

As for 30 Days…that’s how Adam and I felt, we knew it would be bad, but we were going to see it anyway. I’m glad I saw it, even though in the end I didn’t like it. I’d also like to read the graphic novel, which strangely I haven’t for this one…
