“Kurt Wiebe and Riley Rossmo’s “Green Wake” #4 continues this series’ compelling spiral of supernatural detective fiction paired with striking potent visuals…”

“I have little to no interest in Jason Todd, Red Hood or not. However, trapping Jason Todd in the Batmobile on a rescue mission with Dick Grayson and Damian Wayne will quickly pique my interest. It’s not groundbreakingly insightful or anything, but it can be great fun to see characters with this kind of history interact, and Winick makes the most of it in this issue of “Batman and Robin”….”

““The Walking Dead” always has a fairly nice rhythm of horror, panic, and anxiety followed by quiet, recovery, and re-building. After the most brutal horror over the past few issues since perhaps since the Governor and the subsequent raid on the prison, we’re back into a period of quiet and, as always, it’s a much needed respite…”

I also did two other CBR Comic Reviews this week, but I really hated the books, which makes me hesitant to do big fancy blog posts about them…but you can read about how much I hated Magdalena #7 here, and Fear Itself: The Black Widow One-Shot here if you’re super curious.

Also, this has turned into a weirdly Walking Dead weekend…odd!

“The X-Team, currently a bizarre mix of Professor Xavier, Magneto, Rogue, Gambit, Legion, and Frenzy continues to hunt down Legion’s escaped personas which are wreaking havoc wherever they go. Our heroes spend most of their time fighting Chain, a persona that can turn everyone he touches into a duplicate of himself, and who has turned a large part of London into himself by the time the X-Men arrive. Also on the loose is Susan in Sunshine, who is dispatched with clever somewhat mean-spirited tactics by Frenzy. The X-Men defeat both personas and Legion is able to re-absorb them with relative ease — although anyone actually at ease with that whole “digital watch that holds powerful personas in check” is insane — but Styx remains on the loose and may in fact be hunting the X-Men…”

““Secret Avengers” #14 bounces back in time between the life of Brunhilde and the origin of Valkyrie, to one of the many battlefields of “Fear Itself,” as a handful of soldiers march behind Valkyrie to their likely deaths. The story begins with a pair of soldiers avoiding preparing for a battle related to “Fear Itself” and then draws comparisons between their day and Brunhilde’s journey from princess to Odin’s Valkyrie…”

““Gates of Gotham” #2 presents a dense and layered mystery that continues to unravel itself as we explore Gotham’s creation while the modern day Bat-family tries to prevent its destruction. “Gates of Gotham” presents a detailed and fascinating look at the most famous fictional city in comics, and one full of mysteries just waiting to be discovered…”

“Uncanny X-Men” is a solid and pretty book, and there’s nothing especially wrong with it. However it’s also not anything you’ll think about a half hour after you’ve finished reading it. This means that it’s better than a whole lot of comics out there, but certainly not living up to its potential with the current creative team..”

““Supergirl” #65 marks only the second time a woman has ever written “Supergirl.” And the other woman was actress Helen Slater, who co-wrote issue #50. To say there was a lot of pressure for Kelly Sue DeConnick to deliver is an understatement. I’m happy to report that she hit it out of the park.”

““Wonder Woman And The Furies” #1 is a book I did not expect to like given some of the promotional material and my dislike of seeing the Amazons presented as crazy man-hating warriors thirsty for blood. However, against all odds Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning turn in a fairly interesting story that sets a reasonable stage for the war fans know is coming crashing through “Flashpoint” this summer…”
