I bitch and moan (fairly regularly) during Drunk Cover Solicits about being tired of “split face” covers where a comic character’s face is split down the middle. I think I even said recently that I was officially over those kind of covers.

Well, sometimes it’s damn good to be wrong.  Check out this dynamic completely badass Ross Campbell Glory #24 cover (which is issue #2 since its “re-start”).  “Split face” and all, it’s awesome.

Some CBR Reviews from last week – all great stuff this week – love it when it works out that way!

Wolverine & The X-Men #1

“Though the philosophical differences that drove “Schism” ultimately did not compel me, I still remained interested in what the after effects would bring in the form of a splintered X-Men on opposite coasts. The first offering comes this week in the first issue of Jason Aaron and Chris Bachalo’s “Wolverine & The X-Men.” Though the book’s name leaves much to be desired (does Wolverine really have to be splashed across everything?), everything else here is pretty damn interesting…”

Secret Avengers #18

“With “Secret Avengers” #18, Warren Ellis has brought me another comic book that I’m too stupid to fully comprehend but find myself loving anyway …”

Green Wake #6

“Green Wake” was a great little mini-series that has been upgraded into an ongoing series, much to everyone’s benefit. Extending a mini-series into an ongoing doesn’t always work, but there were so many mysteries in the first arc, it’s a pleasure to see Kurtis Wiebe and Riley Rossmo go back to this intriguing concept and dig deeper…”

““The Intrepids” is what more comics should be like. It’s vibrant and fun, smart and enthusiastic. Reading it feels like reading something someone is in love with. It has flaws, sure, but being creator owned you can feel the very soul of the creators being poured into it. I wish more comics felt this way. I wish more readers of comics would give books like “The Intrepids” a chance, because I think they’d feel the passion too…”

“There are few ideas in fiction more fascinating to me than time travel. At the same time, I’ve rarely seen it done in a way in which I can both appreciate it and understand it, which are key elements to enjoying a work of fiction. “The Red Wing” #1 handily manages both, and sets a brilliant stage for a fascinating series about one of our most engrossing ideas…”

““The Walking Dead” always has a fairly nice rhythm of horror, panic, and anxiety followed by quiet, recovery, and re-building. After the most brutal horror over the past few issues since perhaps since the Governor and the subsequent raid on the prison, we’re back into a period of quiet and, as always, it’s a much needed respite…”

I also did two other CBR Comic Reviews this week, but I really hated the books, which makes me hesitant to do big fancy blog posts about them…but you can read about how much I hated Magdalena #7 here, and Fear Itself: The Black Widow One-Shot here if you’re super curious.

Also, this has turned into a weirdly Walking Dead weekend…odd!
