Ah, Civilization 4…how I hate you.

Adam has protested that he does not actually stick out his tongue while playing this game, and he is right, but there is an intense look of concentration that is mostly frustrating, but occasionally cute, that I’m just not a great enough cartoonist to capture, this was the best way I could represent it.

Also, I’m going to do an experiment this week and post comics daily, Monday thru Friday.  I don’t know if I’ll be able to keep up that pace and continue it (especially with my new pseduo-NaNoWriMo commitment), and if it’s not rewarding enough (e.g. not enough blog hits, comments, etc.) then I probably won’t even bother trying again…but we’ll see.  Wish me luck, and thanks for reading!

A Remarkably Sad Day

It’s a very sad day today, as one of my greatest friend’s mother has passed away.

I don’t want to get too detailed, because my friend is a very private person and she was a pretty humble woman. But it should be said that she was amazing. And it’s true that only the good die young, because she was both far too young and incredibly unbelievably good.

She was an inspiration to me, and I’m sure to most everyone that ever encountered her. The world has lost out today, by losing her.

So yesterday began National Novel Writer’s Month (NaNoWriMo), which is a kind of awesome idea that I was completely unaware of until this past October. It’s one of those things where you have no idea how you could have missed it because the second you know about it you see it EVERYWHERE. Anyway, you can read more about it by using the link below (since my Mac is still refusing to link for me) in case you are even more behind in the world than I am.

It’s a pretty great idea. In a nutshell you commit to writing a 50,000 word novel in one month, the month of November. The idea being that while you will likely not write the great American novel, you will be a whirling dervish of words and will produce more than ever before, and maybe some of it is salvageable and maybe just maybe gets you over that creative block that so many of us languish under. In addition, if you actually commit through the site there looks to be all sorts of interactive things and motivators and help and advice and everything. I suppose it’s also a good way to make connections with other writers both near and far and there appears to be a sharing of information and novels and critiques. It all sounds pretty good.

I’m not doing it. I thought about it, but was still on the fence when commitment time came. I’m going to think about seriously committing for next year, and in the meantime I am going to try to do it on my own (and in my own way) anyway.

I don’t know that it will be 50,000 words, and it WILL probably be crap, but I’ve been languishing in how to write part II of a trilogy I have in mind, a book called Lola LeFever, which is part two in my trilogy. Part one is written (ironically it is almost exactly 50,000 words) and has been submitted and handily rejected by one agent (just this past September). I have just (last Tuesday) sent out a query on part one to a second agent, which will likely amount to another solid no. But one of these days someone is going to say yes, and then they’re going to look at the epilogue, which sets up a cliffhanger for the second book and say to me, “So Kelly, have you written the second book yet?” I’d like to be able to say yes.

Unfortunately I really set myself up to be screwed here, because Lola LeFever is all told from a villain’s point of view (Lola) and while I think it is a great and kind of radical idea to ask a reader to identify so with the villain, after spending the first book identifying entirely with the hero, it is really difficult for me to write a villain (because I’m so good you see ;). Anyway, I figure what better way than to just force myself to do it in 30 days…maybe something salvageable will come of it.

What’s the worst that could happen? Seriously…love your thoughts on that… 🙂

Chris Ware is a god among men, it’s good to see EVERYONE is finally getting this.  I was already interested in seeing the Savages thanks to a couple great previews I saw in the theaters that look chock full of amazing performances by powerhouses like Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman.  And now I see the poster.  Created by cartoonist/genius Chris Ware, this is the best movie poster I have ever seen.  Let’s have more of these.

You know what would be really great?  If when the DVD came out this was the cover…I am so sick of horrible DVD covers that only slightly resemble the original great movie poster, because of actors and agents and studios (or WHOEVER) deciding that we have to have photoshopped floating heads and huge names printed all over what was a beautiful original work, because apparently we won’t buy or rent or whatever a dvd if it doesn’t have a giant floating Robert Downey Jr. head.  Zodiac (see below) is a perfect example of this.  Great poster.  Horribly destoryed DVD cover.  I almost didn’t buy the DVD because of it, but the strong performances made me cave in the end.  Curse you Hollywood.

Look at this poster – GORGEOUS.

And here’s the crappy DVD version, complete with giant floaty heads.  Just terrible.

This interview with the Pushing Daisies executive producers is either the most well crafted series of lies, or is a perfect example why it is such a great show e.g. everyone loves and supports each other and are all working toward a common goal and vision.

If all executive producer interviews sounded like this I think we’d have a lot better tv on our plates.

Yea!

You can read about Joss Whedon’s new project Dollhouse with Eliza Dushku here and here. Let me say again, YEA!

Perhaps I am just overly hopeful since this season’s television, including favorites of mine from last year have been so terrible, but I’m excited about the idea of having some creative Joss Whedon ideas and dialogue on the small screen. I have minor concerns that I may have outgrown Joss’ style, in that though I still love my Buffy I’m forced to admit that I can’t be sure I would be as obsessed with it today as I was then. However, his work on the Buffy comic is current and great and totally enjoyed by me, and as mentioned earlier here, his Astonishing X-Men (also current) is totally brilliant. So okay, I’ve decided I’m excited no matter what. Yea next year! Boo to this year!

On a related sidenote, NBC is scrapping the Heroes Orgins show that was set to air in the spring, during the Heroes regular season hiatus. The official word is that it’s because of the writer’s strike issues, but I suspect it’s more because Heroes currently stinks to high heaven and who wants a spin-off of stinkage.

Happy Halloween everyone!  I hope you are all wearing at least a semblance of a costume today, although I’m sure many of you disappointed me…don’t turn yourself in…I can see you from the guilt radiating off your non-costumed body.

Here’s a funny, but horrifying little article about how zombies will someday be a real life problem, and not just a movie problem.  It’s no secret that zombies scare the crap out of me…suddenly I feel like becoming a republican and getting a big sawed off shot gun…well okay, not becoming a republican, that’s too scary…even for Halloween.

Great interview about the Damages series and finale, as well as information about whether it will be picked up for a second season (apparently still in question).  PICK IT UP!  NOW!  Don’t you see there is crap like Heroes on TV…SAVE US ALL…!

So I think last night was the worst episode yet.  The previews for next week looked more interesting and less yawn inducing than last night’s episode, however it also pretty much looked like an uninventive “re-packaging” of last season.  Half of New York…I mean the world is dead?  New York is destroyed…I mean evacuated.  Hiro…I mean Peter, went to the future to see it.  Wow.  Interesting…that’s stuff we’ve never seen before.  Oh, and by ‘never seen before’ I mean we’ve seen almost exactly that before.

And what’s with already giving away what is going to make that “evacuation and quarantine” happen…could it be Bob’s newly developed “virus” that Suresh decided not to test out on the girl with the horrible southern accent?  Because, hey it could mutate and spread to the general population?!  Gee, I wonder.

I cannot WAIT for Sylar to kill the twins (and if that’s not in the creators plans they should write it in immediately), but especially the girl, whatever her name is.  It really sucks when you have a twin that has all the instincts and all the power and you’re just a whiny little bitch and that everytime you get upset you kill people and only your brother can control you, yet somehow you speak almost perfect English, but your more talented twin can not only not speak a word, but understands little (although this looks to be a red herring – we’ll see).  I know the creators were likely trying to make the girl twin (I’m not even going to bother looking up her name) the “really cool badass powerful one” but they’ve only succeeded in making her the “emotional out of control whiny annoying one”.  Congratulations guys!

I’m going to hang in for next week’s episode, at this point mostly because I’m a masochist.  This shit is just terrible.  It’s embarrassing.

I’m also going to start rating the episodes based on how many times I have to sigh and roll my eyes.  Last night’s count was roughly 85 times…give or take.  I’d say that equals about an F-…is that even possible?

this is my favorite one thus far.  what do you guys think?

sidenote:  Adam refuses to wear those kitten ears, even on Halloween, despite how hilariously adorable they look on him.  So i figured, since it’s my comic world…he’s wearing them.  Maybe I’ll make him wear them ALWAYS in my comic world.

sidenote 2:  I sadly did NOT go home with the Giraffe.
