Meh. Today sucked. I mean, I wrote some scenes I really liked but my numbers are just pathetic. It doesn’t help that I’ve gotten sick (because of course I have!):

NOVEL X WORD COUNT: 0

VARIOUS & MISC WORD COUNT: 2,202

TOTAL NANO COUNT THUS FAR: 7,666

Gah. Made my big deadline and I guess it took it out of me, cause I didn’t do well on word count today, very disappointed. But I did spend some time revising, so I guess I have to take that into account. Lot of work and not a lot of word count in revising.

Mmm. Another rough day from a standpoint of numbers, but I finished my work that was due Wednesday (today) so by any measure I call that a success! 😉

As mentioned, not a ton of words today as I was mostly working on an outline/pitch and that’s more about getting down notes, doing research, and finessing things than it is about high word count. Came in just under 1,000.

So not a great day, but this is a tough deadline I’m under. Also I had to take about 6 hours to try to switch over to my new iphone (and it’s still not done!!!! grrrrr. Don’t ask).

I often take a (totally unofficial) stab at NaNoWriMo. I’ve only successfully managed it one year (the glorious year that was 2011). But that was a crazy success in that I not only DOMINATED my word count (over 75k on that novel) AND that novel became my book STORYKILLER.

So it’s both hard to resist the siren song of that one year’s awesome success and it’s also often something that feels like a too high standard (which I will constantly fail to meet). Anyway, I have A LOT to write right now, including really needing to get a high number of words down on a novel project, so I thought I might just give it a try again this year and might have a better shot of hitting some of these goals if I was forced to document it and be accountable.

So here we are.

Yesterday was a massive failure (long story, don’t ask) but I am determined not to be derailed!

So here’s what I have to accomplish this month writing wise. Going forward I’ll track novel writing count as one number and then I’ll just merge all the others into a second number:

NOVEL X: 50k

I need more than 50k – I’d feel better about 80k, but 50k would be amazing especially considering everything else I’m committed to.

COMIC BOOK SCRIPTS: 6 scripts

I’d actually like to get 7 done, but 6 are necessary

COMIC BOOK REVISIONS: 1 script

I’ll probably have to do more, but for now this is the one on deck

COMIC BOOK SHORT: 1

Short Story for a comic (8 – 10 pages)

COMIC OUTLINES: 1

This is due asap, so it’s first on the list

COMIC SYNOPSIS: 2

Two mini-series synopses due (asap on this one)

COMIC PITCHES: 2

I actually have 3 due, but one can wait until December (I think) so I’m backburnering it

SHORT STORIES: 4 – 6

More accurately I need to finish 3, and do 2 to 3 completely new ones

This looks like A LOT (and Jesus, typing it out it FEELS like a lot) but technically it’s probably around 100k and if I did 75k while working a full time job in 2011 then I don’t see why I can’t do 100k while THIS is my full time job. RIGHT?

Guess we’ll see!

Off to get a reasonable word count down for today. Also I’m cross posting this on my Tumblr, which, I’m sorry to say is where I do most of my “blogging” these days. So you might want to follow me over there if you want to be sure to stay in the loop.

Thanks for reading!

 01 One

‘There’s something wrong with me,’ boomed through Tessa’s head on repeat. She nearly shattered the flimsy stall door as she kicked it in with her combat boot and got over the toilet only seconds before she vomited what felt like everything she’d ever eaten. A pair of girls at the sinks behind her groaned and got bitchy.

“Ewww.”

“Gross. Way to go, new girl.”

Tessa stepped on the flush with her boot and staggered out of the stall, glaring at them.

“Double ewww,” the blonde said, looking Tessa up and down and making a gagging sound. Tessa thought for a moment about punching her in the throat, but the pinch of pain in her stomach made her feel strangely kittenish. Instead, she just moved to the sinks and turned the tap, which immediately snapped off in her hand as if she was The Hulk.

“Balls,” Tessa muttered, tossing the broken knob to the floor. “Piece of junk,” she said squinting her eyes shut through a wave of sharp pains while the cool water gushed from the faucet. Tessa leaned over the sink and rinsed out her mouth as the girls slid from the bathroom giggling and calling her names. She washed her face, not caring that her hair or the heavy black make-up around her eyes was getting wet.

She glanced at her watch.

2:25 pm.

She’d been 17 for three minutes.

What an awesome start to what was sure to be a banner year back in Lore, Oregon.

So, I don’t really talk about it much here (in part because I have been painfully MIA from the blog – sorry!) but I am just fanatical in my love for GAME OF THRONES (and no, I have not yet read the books. Yes, I probably will, but likely not until the television series ends, don’t hassle me!)

Anyway, so I came across this awesome Game of Thrones tumblr post thanks to a friend, and got a good laugh. A little odd/sad that his dad doesn’t seem to know ANY of the female character names (save Gilly and Sansa – weird!) but still, it was fun and funny.

My answers to one of the sheets

More importantly, it left me wondering how I’d do. Even a fanatic for the show can have trouble with the names. Considering the large cast, the fact that some of the names are very complicated with uncommon (for my American brain) spellings, and since I’ve never read the books (seeing things in print, and seeing how they’re spelled, really helps my ability to recall) I didn’t figure I’d do great, but I wanted to try anyway.

I took some time to rework the original images (hope Mr. Gabe of Thrones doesn’t mind I used his sheets as a basis?) and I added five characters to that the last card (which previously had only 4 characters now has 9 like the rest). And then I tried my best. Spelling errors be damned!  I mostly took it seriously, but couldn’t resist a few jokes (although already forming in my mind an all-joke version – made from love!).

I’ll also put the blank one up here in case you also want to try it yourself at home. And those of you who already read the book – I expect you to get like 98% – and really accurate spelling!

Click through to see all of my badly spelled answers as well as the blank version to download. Enjoy! Oh, and POTENTIAL SPOILERS!

Here’s what this about!

Crap. I really hoped to get a good 3k down (which should be about my daily goal). Huge fail. :(  I’ll try again tomorrow.

Today’s word count: 240

Total word count: 2,151

Favorite thing: A terrible Star Wars joke that is deliberately terrible.

For those of you that have expressed interest in my experience with my novel – the writing of it, the query process, securing an agent, shopping the book to publishers, and beyond – look no further!  The first in a series of essays about my experiences with my first novel (once upon a time called Superhero Junkies) is up on Lit Reactor.

The Long & Winding Road: Part 1 – Writing The Novel

I hope you all enjoy it, and for those of you engaged in some phase of novel writing, that it might also be helpful. Enjoy and as always – comments, likes, and retweets are much appreciated!
