Panel Of The Week

So this is sort of cheating…again.  But I’m sure when you take a look you can see why I didn’t want to separate these two completely fantastic DV8 #6 panels by Rebekah Isaacs.  And in truth, I worked hard already on eliminating the rest of the book, which was so gorgeous that it had panels on literally every page that could have qualified for ‘panel of the week’.  I love this book.  I’m probably going to cry…or at least mourn in some way when this series is up in two months.

So here we go, from DV8 #8, with art by Rebekah Isaacs.

I cheated this week and picked a couple…but I have really good reasons, I swear.

First of all, this…from Batman & Robin #14:

And am I wrong?  No, I’m not.  It’s crazy f’ed up panels like this that make The Joker one of the greatest villains of all time.  Also, look at Damian all trussed up and painted like a clown…hilarious and also horrifying.  Awesome stuff.

And this, also from Batman & Robin #14:

It’s panels like this that make Batman the single greatest superhero of all time.  Look at the that silhouette!  A-MAZING.  And I don’t deny that Bats is my favorite and thus I’m totally biased…but aren’t all we comics geeks unreasonably crazy for certain characters?

But this, from Batgirl #14, which is a double (triple?) cheat, because it’s a page, not a panel, also deserves mention.  I’m a fairly vocal non-fan of Stephanie Brown as Batgirl, and I don’t love the book, but I continue buying it because I think it’s an important book to have out there for girls and women – and in the hopes that I will manage to fall in love…eventually.  I also think Bryan Q. Miller IS actually doing a pretty great job finding Steph’s voice.  Case in point, this page, which is executed perfectly.  I’m not always crazy for Garbett’s art but I think he nails Steph in panel 3.

Ah superheroes, they’re just like us…but not really.

I love this panel from Black Cat #3 of Spider-Man and Black Cat having a serious discussion about their relationship (and stuff) by shouting across rooftops and the side of buildings.  Hilarious and fun.

Ah superheroes, just like us...not really.

I had a few that I loved from Black Widow #5 illustrated by Daniel Acuna this week, but I decided to go with this one at the last minute.  Something about a badass spy, holding a hostage and a smoking gun while telling heroes like Wolverine and Captain America that they should have waited in the parking lot is just hilarious and awesome to me.

And before you panic that I’ve totally lost my mind by posting something that looks like it’s essentially clothing unzipped to Natasha’s stomach – it totally works in the context of the story – which is all I ever really ask for.  CONTEXT.  :)

As I’ve mentioned on She Has No Head! recently, I’ve been struggling with mainstream comics lately, feeling burned out and frustrated.  In an effort to see the silver lining, I’m going to try to pick a panel every week that stands out and makes me deliriously happy in its awesomeness.

This week’s winner (by a long shot) is: Valkyrie, guest starring in Avengers Academy #3, and proving that not only should she be a guest star more frequently, but that she deserves her own ongoing series.  I would buy the hell out of a book in which Valkyrie shows off her hilarious badassitude with regularity.  So fun.

Despite the awesomeness present however, this panel helps prove that Valkyrie desperately needs a new/revised costume…as the metal boob craziness doesn’t work, even in Mike McKone’s capable hands (er, that came out wrong).
