#30 Comic of the Day

kt-_030-comic.jpg

I love all those old holiday shows, my favorite of course is the traditional Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer and The Charlie Brown Christmas special, but there is something less fun and exciting about tivo’ing them and watching them whenever than just happening to chance upon them…but I guess I’m a busy girl compared to how I was as a child because without tivo’ing them I expect I’d never catch them.  The shine is also a bit off the penny as part of the experience was watching them with my brothers…that is a great memory, and while Adam indulges me and will generally watch with me, he doesn’t enjoy them as I do, so it’s not really the same.

I’m especially excited this year to go home and see my brothers though, because I tracked down a copy of Emmett Otter’s Jug Band Christmas last year on dvd for us to watch this year…this was an old favorite of ours by Jim Henson’s group and they don’t replay it often (or ever?) like the other specials…so it will be fun to take that trip down memory lane.  I’ll let you know if it holds up after all these years.

I never could get excited about the classic Rudolph, Frosty, et al. Only thing they meant to me was Christmas was coming.

But, Die Hard, Home Alone, It’s a Wonderful Life, and Miracle on 34th Street, those all have meaning. They all carry that weight of the “good old days” from childhood. So I know what you mean.

Rudolph was on last night on CBS! I almost called you! I gotta tell you though, without the nostalgic pull on my heartstrings, it really wouldn’t hold up.

I tried watching it but, like Adam, Shelt isn’t really into it and it just isn’t the same.

    Had to add –

The best line from the Rudolph claymation (sp?) comes from the coach of all the young bucks: “Come on now kids and remember we aren’t going to let Rudolph join any of our reindeer games.” Awesome!

TK42ONE: we’ve all got our own family classics. in addition to the animated and claymation that i love, A Christmas Story is always good (though overplayed) and Die Hard, Major League, and My Cousin Vinnie are classics for my family…though they have little to do with the holidays…except Die Hard I guess :)

theyetiinside: i know it was on – it totally spawned this cartoon – because i too tried to watch it, but i was by myself and i’d missed the first half…and it just wasn’t the same without you guys. it made me feel kind of sad.

that is hands down the best line.

sidenote: i was able to find a copy (a pretty bad one) of the Disney Halloween that we used to watch and that used to be David’s favorite…it was fun to show it to Adam, but again, without you guys the feeling wasn’t quite right. i was bitching about why they haven’t released that as a dvd to buy, but after watching it, Disney is way too wussy these days to release something that has “demons” and “witches” and things…i miss the good ol’ disney days. *sigh* now i’m bummed out.

prepare yourself for EMMETT OTTER…cause we’re totally watching it!

I’m prepared for Emmett Otter. I’d also love to see the Disney Halloween if you’d bring that. It could be a drunken good time.

me & steve own emmett otter…it does hold up but watching it as adult makes me realize how sad it was…it may bring a tear…i might watch it tonight now…after project runway (i’m a junkie)

k: LOVE project runway…and so does Adam, though he hates to admit it. i haven’t seen Emmett Otter since I was a kid…i’ve been holding on to the dvd since last year (when it didn’t arrive in time to see it with my brothers) in the hopes that seeing it with them will be more…magical than just popping it in on my own. i love that you and steve know about EO…almost nobody else i know has heard of it.

have you ever seen “Animal Olympics”? that was another childhood fav for my brothers and i…though not holiday related.

I want the record to show that I love Rudolph and that I didn’t watch it with Kelly but the last time I saw it (a couple of years ago) I liked it a lot and I thought it held up well. Charlie Brown Christmas, and the other Charlie Brown Holidays, are good and I still like them. So let us not portray me as a Rudolph/Charlie Brown hater. I’m “into it”.

I’m really an Island of the Misfit Toys man. Yukon Cornelius is the shit!

kfugrip: well then you’re in luck…because it recorded last night (Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer – which is the Island of Misfit Toys one) so you’re officially marked down for holiday cartoon/claymation watching for tonight.

and i didn’t mean to say you’re a hater, just that it’s not the same as watching with my brothers from back in the day.

    When watching tonight….

….note how Yukon brings in the abominable snowman and that in the very next frame the yeti is free and putting the star on the tree. I guess they didn’t want to run through the hassle of untying him in claymation.

yetiinside: i can’t really blame them since the other day i didn’t even want to attempt to draw adam putting on jeans in my cartoon :)

yeti: oh, yeah, i’ll bring disney halloween as well, though prepare yourself for the subpar quality…some sections are pretty great, but others are pretty grainy and blown out.

I’m a BIG fan of Mr. Heatmiser… sigh, Christmas just isn’t what it used to be!
