#167 ~ Rabid Lamb Comics

If you haven’t seen American Beauty then this bit is probably lost on you…I’d like to apologize, except all I can say is “shame on you”.

Hope you all had great weekends. I wouldn’t log mine as great, I mostly worked and avoided work, but I finally at least cleaned my apartment. Yay. SO overdue. You have no idea. This week proves to be hellish and I’ll be out of town for some of it, but I promise to do my best to get the comics up every morning, I know most of you can’t get through the day without them 😉

Oh oh oh oh oh I’ve seen American Beauty! In fact, I own the DVD! I really hope there’s not a dead Spacey though in the kitchen.

Maybe you have a ghost? OooooooooooooooooOOoOoo…

See, this is where I’m way out of step with the American psyche. I thought American Beauty was way contrived and just so over-the-top. Look, a floating grocery bag! It’s like life! I didn’t buy it for a second. But this is probably me being picky more than anything else, as I also thought another movie embraced by the critics in the same era as A.B., L.A. Confidential, was super over-hyped. Since then I’ve been pretty much in step with critics (although the critics liked the latest Indiana Jones movie and I thought it was rubbish). I keep telling myself I’ll have to go back and watch American Beauty just to see if maybe I was in the wrong mood or something the first time I saw it, and thus thought it was bad. Can anyone tell me what they liked about it (besides Chris Cooper’s performance which was, admittedly, haunting) so I can pay attention next time I see it?

No I haven’t seen American Beauty. But I’m guessing a random dish fell from the drying rack. My weekend was normal, which means it turned out okay. Got the grass cut, lots of scavenger hunting done, and laundry washed.

spinachflame: I can see why some people don’t like American Beauty…I’ve heard the word pretentious thrown around a lot for sure. I guess, for me, I always took that scene you’re referring to in two ways. On one hand it IS kind of beautiful…both that bag in the wind, and in a larger sense, all the missed beauty…the non-obvious beauty that is around us. On the other hand, I took that character to be a somewhat dark and pretentious (though very smart) teenager. And no offense to teenagers, but they tend to look at things very few ways, and all of them are extreme. So it seemed fitting to me that a smart savvy teen with a serious and somewhat sad past, who hates things that are conventional (like the conventional beauty of Mena Suvari – who I don’t think is that beautiful if any fashion by the way) would both find that bag fascinating…and also want to show it off to his girlfriend…”see, look how introspective I am!”. It just reads honest to me…which I love.

TK42ONE: You should. And while it’s likely not going to be a dead Kevin Spacey in my kitchen…it’s way more interesting than a dish falling from a drying rack. I don’t even have a drying rack…I actually have a tiny little New York sized dishwasher. :)

Just when I’m DYING to have a lawn, someone reminds me that grass actually has to be cut :)

I hear you, it’s probably a combination of my dislike of self-conscious lyricism in movies (see: Y Tu Mama Tambien and Amile) and my annoyance at Wes Bentley. Can’t really stand the guy, and I’ve only ever seen him in this movie. Ack. Anyway, I’ll probably revisit the film someday just to give it another chance since so many folks whose opinions I trust liked it.

As a sidenote, I saw a movie over the weekend that everyone in the world hated and I actually kind of liked: Elizabeth the Golden Years.

Also meant to say that I liked your comic today.

    Thanks spinachflame.

I am medium on Elizabeth the Golden Years, I thought it was far better than most people said, but I thought compared to the first Cate Blanchet Elizabeth it did suffer by comparison, in all ways EXCEPT costuming. The budget was clearly out of control on costuming for the second one…AMAZING stuff. It’s almost worth watching the movie for that alone.
