awesomeness

You are currently browsing the archive for the awesomeness category.

But no, I can’t tell you when, because though Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim has released a preview trailer for Season 4 of The Venture Brothers, there is still no official premiere date.  Check out the trailer though – it’s awesome.

Venture Brothers

If you don’t know about The Venture Brothers then this trailer will only confuse the hell out of you…well, even if you know The Venture Brothers it might confuse the hell out of you, but you’ll be used to it, because you’re used to the random awesome magic of…The Venture Brothers.  Nice circle logic I did there, huh?  If you watch until the end of the trailer you’ll automatically go into the next video which is The Venture Brothers creators talking at the San Diego Comic-Con Panel…and it’s pretty funny in its own right.

On thing to note, that panel is looking very man heavy…it sure looks like you guys could use some strong female writers…and um, just so you know…yes, I’m available.  :)

There are also some great stills from Season 4 (among other awesome posts) on Jackson Publick’s blog Publick Nuisance – check it out.

ben-lyons

At The Movies, once a “must see” for Adam and me, has finally (after a year) retconned the show back to what will hopefully be something closer to the ‘old show’ and is dumping its terrible new hosts as step one.

I feel bad for Ben Mankiewicz, who there was really nothing wrong with, but jammed into the ridiculous new format, and partnered with moron of the moment Ben Lyons, couldn’t possibly win. The good news is that I think Mankiewicz’s reputation will remain unscathed…we all know, and many articles and blogs have made it publicly clear, that he’s not the reason this went bad.

I was never a huge fan of frequent co-hoster of the old show, Michael Phillips (chalk it up to personal taste) but the guys knows films, which is what is required here.  And A.O. Scott is great – both fun to watch and incredibly well informed when it comes to film.  I’m excited to start TIVOing this show again…beginning September 5th.

As many of you know I railed against the new format, and especially the disgusting casting choice of Ben Lyons, as an actual film critic when he’s really just a sound bite shill for the machine.  And while from go there was no chance I was going to watch this show with Lyons masquerading as an “expert” I felt the need to blog about this and actively oppose it when Lyons had the gall to list the Twilight TRAILER as his “Three To See” pick in an early episode.  Yes, the man suggested that instead of seeing a real film, that people go view a highly publicized TRAILER online.  What a brainless dickbag.  Anyway…

Wouldn’t it be great if this small step signaled a change in the world at large?  The move towards using informed qualified talent rather than “attractive”* connected hacks?  It’s almost enough to make me have some faith in the world…almost.

Thanks to all you other fans, writers, etc., that both called this out for what it was – and most importantly refused to watch it and sent a message via the ratings, so that we could put a stop to this.  One small step for man…one giant leap for mankind I say.

*I use attractive in quotes because I find few things more reprehensible than looking at Ben Lyons face, but by “traditional beauty standards” I suppose he is considered technically more attractive than the rest of these guys.

Battle Royale.  Koushun Takami.  Fiction

Wow.   I got through this puppy in like four days, which is fast even if it wasn’t over 600 pages.  It’s some of the most fun and most riveting reading I’ve done in a long time.  Just balls to the wall action from about page 30 on and I was literally compelled to turn every page, staying up all hours like I used to as a kid because I couldn’t put it down.

Every once in a while I get my pretentious hackles up about ‘commercial fiction’, and I’m not about to sell out my precious short fiction and literary novels or anything, but let’s face it, commercial fiction IS commercial fiction because sometimes it is just AWESOME.  Commercial fiction, when really good, can just be something that you throw yourself into with complete abandon (and want to tell everyone about while you’re reading it).  Also, while we’re talking about things that are awesome, can we discuss the cover?  Best. Cover. Ever. If this cover would make sense for my novel I’d steal it in a second.  Sadly there are no badass Japanese school kids in my novel.

The premise of Battle Royale, in brief, for the uninitiated, is that once a year a handful of junior high student classes (15 year olds) are chosen for a top secret program in which they are dropped off on an island, with only their own classmates and are each given a knapsack containing some supplies and a random weapon (ranging in lethality from machine guns to a dinner fork) and sent off on a mission to be ‘the last one standing’…literally.

They are to literally kill each other off until there is only one of them left, at which time the “winner” will be sent home with prize money (and probably a one way ticket to the loony bin).

Badass, right?  Totally.

So what are the problems with Battle Royale?  Not much. The first 30 pages are a bit of a challenge as Takami tries to introduce 42 characters by their full names – Shuya Nanahara, Norika Nakagawa, and Shogo Kawada being three of them – so you can see how it’s impossible to remember all 42 – don’t even try, just let the names flow over you – you’ll learn them later.  In fact, cruise through those first 30 pages, because after that you’re not going to want to put the book down.

There are a few wonky areas where the translation is not great, but overall it’s not too bad, just a few sticky spots.  Takami also has a bad habit of kind of force feeding us backstory – I suppose so we can care about his characters – but I found it a little forced and frustrating (though perhaps that this is also a problem in part with the translation?).

Regardless of the sometimes unnecessary backstory, the book buzzes along beautifully and I quite frankly recommend it to every single person that has not yet read it – except my mother, who doesn’t love violence so much – so if you’re like my mother, maybe it’s not for you, otherwise – run don’t walk to your nearest bookstore and buy a copy – if you don’t I’ll stab you with my dinner fork.  Seriously, I got one in my knapsack and I’m trying to work my way up to machine gun…

The Torture Continues Header YES! postable

So, instead of having to go through the horrible process of sending out massive amounts of query letters to agents for my novel (and likely receiving massive amounts of rejections) I got incredibly lucky and had two excellent agents from big agencies competing for my book over the last week.

I’m not going to go into specifics here for a variety of reasons but basically one agent came to me via a query I actually sent last year (long crazy story that worked out beautifully) and one agent came to me through a connection.  It was a brutal decision (one I never imagined I’d have to make) deciding between these two fantastic individuals, but I finally did make a decision this week and I’m proud to say that I’m officially working exclusively with one of the agents on my book.

We’ll be doing revisions for the foreseeable future – I have no idea how long, but I hope I can get it done quickly so we can continue moving forward – but I thought you’d all like to know about this great moment of happiness and success in the deluge that is usually REJECTION!

Please pause of a moment of pure happiness:

:)

Now if only I can get some of these damn short fiction pieces published.  In fact, just to keep my ego in check…let’s do a status update on those.  It’s not looking pretty folks…

Phase III Updated Stats:  6 of 10 Rejected.  4 still out there.

Sidenote:  this is tagged ‘champagne’ because I will be drinking an entire bottle of it on my own tonight.  Whee!

Thank the gods.  The novel is finally done.

I do have do a final edit and proofread tomorrow but the novel is officially done.  It’s clocking in at a massive 440 pages (119,743 words).  I’m hoping to cut that down a little bit tomorrow, getting it closer to 400 pages, but done is done is done.  Right?

It goes on Monday to my writing group and an agent that has been waiting for it for months (and by waiting for it I mean he probably has forgotten all about it – but technically I have an email telling me to send it on through when it’s done – so I’ll be sending it).

Monday will be Adam’s and my “big day of celebration that we cannot afford” which will include at least the following things:  An afternoon showing of Duplicity in our neighborhood theater (movies on a weekday!  this is what unemployment should be about!).  Dinner out (probably at a seafood restaurant we like on the West Side).  And when we come home we’ll probably watch another movie and just hang out while I drink an entire bottle of champagne, already purchased and chilling in the fridge for the last two months waiting for me to hurry up and finish.

I also already placed an order on Amazon for a few things I’ve desperately wanted but told myself I wouldn’t buy until I finished.  I bought them about thirty minutes after declaring it complete :)

Tuesday a small selection of queries (six maybe?) will go out to agents.

And on Wednesday, glorious Wednesday I’ll move on to new projects, which include posting good posts more frequently, working on Jilted League, building my website, drawing some sample Shiksa pages, and hopefully finding a super talented artist to work on another graphic novel project I have up my sleeve – I’ve actually already found the artist I want for this  – but she’s playing hard to get – read: not returning my email :(

Man it feels good to move on to something new.  I just wish I’d managed it before it turned 85 degrees outside.  I hate New York in the summer…and that’s not supposed to mean late April, but apparently this year, it does.

UPDATE:  It took an extra day, but the final revisions are done.  I wasn’t able to cut as much as I wanted, but font changes alone saved me 50 pages.  Final draft is 388 pages (approximately 118,000 words).

Whether you’re a PC or a Mac you’re just going to have to appreciate this tale of customer service.

I recently ordered a product from Mac, it was a software update.  I ordered it on April 6th.  It shipped to me on April 7th.  I have still yet to receive it – more likely due to the fact that I live in New York City and my mailman is a complete jackass than anything Mac has done wrong.  Regardless though,  I called up Mac today and explained the problem to see if there was anything they could do – adding that though my tracking information shows that Mac shipped it on April 7th, it is still showing “scheduled to be delivered April 14th” (while it is in fact April 22nd).

Without another word, my rep (Christian) had another software update sent to me at no charge via overnight Fed Ex and which I should receive in the next day or two.

The call was quick and painless, I was on hold for less than two minutes, my representative spoke perfect flawless English, and even though the problem is not likely on the side of Mac (or mine) they have corrected the problem and made me one very happy customer.

I have to say, I can’t remember when I have ever had customer service this excellent.  Even when the end result has been satisfactory (i.e. you get your refund, or product, or problem solved etc.) the process is usually frustrating and long and drawn out.

So, since I mostly feel like I have to rant and rave and complain about the world on this blog – today I was handed excellent customer service and I think they at least deserve to be recognized  – if only via my tiny inconsequential blog.  So – “Thanks Mac!”

If I had a job I’d go out and buy something new from Mac just to show my appreciation.  Unfortunately it will have to wait until the cash flows more freely into my pockets.  :)

05_Flatbed_1 - APRIL

I’m kind of a jerk.

Especially lately, I’m not that fun to be around (feel free to ask Adam for confirmation).  My humor, if present at all lately, is self deprecating, or sharp and pointy and mean.

I think this isn’t something that I “achieved” overnight.  It’s something I’ve been working on for years…and now, unemployed and working non-stop on a book that just won’t freaking let itself be finished, I sometimes feel like I’ve kind of imploded on myself.

So it was nice to see this (YOU MUST CLICK THE LINK!) today and realize I’m still human, and maybe not as cynical and jerky as I thought I was.  I don’t watch and in fact pretty much revile  American Idol, Dancing With the Stars, and Britain, Spain, Australia, Whoever has Talent…or any of their ilk, and yet I had goosebumps when this woman sang like I haven’t had in…well, I can’t remember how long…and by the end my eyes were honest to gods misty…I think a tear might have even rolled out onto a cheek.

And let’s just talk about the fact that from what she says about herself, AND the performance, she could not have picked a better song in all the world.  I’ve always loved that song, since I was a teenager, but this just gave it a whole new dimension to me.

I wish all the world will watch this, and take a step back and be less cynical…even if it’s just once a day, to allow for the possibility of more extraordinary women like Susan Boyle to be heard – because they’re out there – I know they are.

Pop Candy, a site I’ve talked about pretty frequently on this blog as an awesome source of all things pop culture, has featured yours truly as their reader of the day. So head on over to Pop Candy and see what Whitney’s talking about (it’s always something good) and if you can’t get enough of ME, then here’s the link directly to my Reader of the Day “interview”.

Thanks for the feature Whitney – it’s an honor!

VOTE!

I had to post this because it’s literally the first thing to make me laugh in days as I’m so tense about the elections.  Hilarious.  The article on Jezebel I stole it from is also good, so check it out.  But mostly, GO OUT AND VOTE.  I feel like there should be a new law instituted that people who don’t vote should be shipped out to a country where you don’t GET to vote for some period of time between one and five years…just so they can understand what an amazing right it is to even have…and not to squander it when they have it again.

And don’t even get me started on the undecideds at this point…HOW CAN YOU BE UNDECIDED?  What magical thing is going to happen or needs to be said to get you to just FREAKING DECIDE ALREADY…!?!?!?

So, I am officially one of those people that needs to “chill the fuck out”…I’m a ball of nerves…and I’m hoping it is all for naught.  That this country is going to actually turn out huge for Obama…and our map is going to look very very blue…bluer than it has looked in a very long time…and that maybe this country can finally start the long path to healing…I just need to stop reading conservative blogs and websites that have me so paranoid I don’t even want to wake up in the morning…

So I tried guys, I really did, but it’s 11:32pm on Friday night, and I’m still not fully packed, Adam hasn’t come home from work yet, our cab is coming for us at 5:00am, and I still haven’t drawn one full comic as promised for remote posting during my vacation week. So I’ve failed you (I’m sure you’re all handling the disappointment pretty well). So I’ll have to have ANOTHER little hiatus over here on Rabid Lamb, I’ll probably post while I’m away since I’ll have access to a computer, but as there will be no scanner there will also be no comics. Sorry – I blame it on the 70 plus hours I worked this week in five days…

Here’s a little parting gift though, the view from my beach house lounge chair…which I will only leave to get snacks and drinks, dips in the pool, and strolls down to the private beach cove below the house. Are you jealous yet? My biggest problem now is that I’m having trouble deciding which books to pack…and how many 😉
