Home today, taking a well deserved day off, since it turns out I never managed to take a real legitimate vacation this year and I’ll be damned if one single vacation day goes unused. I’m excited to have a nice little chunk of holiday time off to get some things accomplished, although I looked at my to do list and it’s clear I live in a complete fantasy land…I’ll be lucky if I get a third of it done. Wish me luck…I’ll be posting a special Thanksgiving comic tomorrow, so if you’re bored and trying to escape family, be sure to check in.

Happy Holidays!

We’ll all know soon enough I suppose…

Ugh.  This was so painful guys.  The lead actor was the worst, most wooden actor I think I’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing, but none of the performances were good and the effects were not good, not even for 1981, and it just seemed so dated and weak.  Just terrible, and then to top it off we watched The Omega Man as well, which was equally brutal.  Probably a worse movie overall, but with Omega I had less hopeful expectations.  Let’s just hope I’ve gotten the bad movie watching out of my system as Margot At The Wedding; Southland Tales; I’m Not There; and hopefully The Night Porter are all on tap for the long Thanksgiving weekend.  I’m really only worried about Southland Tales…fingers crossed though.

Check out good reviews of both The Omega Man and Scanners by Adam on his blog.

While I did edit down, I still got two.  I have no self control when it comes to books.  It’s a shame.  Someday though I’ll have a massive (impressive) library and thousands of dollars of credit card debt to show for it…wait…I already have the credit card debt…hmmm…

The only thing I hate drawing more than me, is drawing cars.  Fortunately I had so many unattractive word balloons to squeeze in I was able to leave limited space to actually draw the car.  Perhaps I should have stretched this comic out over several days, because really, it both looks terrible and even more crazy things than that happened, hindsight is 20/20 I suppose.

In the end the guy hollared at me so much (and started to get out of his livery cab) that I ended up going  back to his car and letting him give me his number, if only so he wouldn’t get out and follow me (my apartment was right there).  When I got up to the apartment a few minutes later Adam saw the number in my hand and I had to relay the whole silly scenario.  Suffice to say he made me throw out livery cab guy’s number.

Okay, I’m going to post daily again this week.  I admit however, that I enjoyed this much less this weekend (though I got farther) and I also did almost no writing…so I’m not sure drawing these silly little comics (that I’m not enjoying as much now) is actually time better spent than on other things.  It’s certainly better spent if it’s instead of TV watching or random internet surfing, but if it’s instead of writing…and maybe even reading…I’m not sure it’s worth it.  Maybe I’ll feel differently by Friday…we’ll see.

Anybody do anything great this weekend?  I saw No Country For Old Men…it was AMAZING.  So good.  The only negative, without giving anything away, was that I felt a bit ripped off in the “showdown” with Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin. They were both so amazing and there was such an intense lead up to those confrontations…I have to admit feeling a bit robbed, otherwise a pefect film.

As I’ve mentioned before, Adam is a far superior cartoonist and artist than I am, and he’s been proving it in spades lately as he’s been sketching a lot more these days (I’m not sure who is influencing who at this point, but as long as we’re both more productive, who cares). Below is a little sketch he did of me called Kelly Bunny. It’s a great little drawing (and he was very nice to me, representationally speaking) and he agreed to let me put it up. I’ve been begging for weeks months for him to add comic strip or cartoon content to my blog…so I’ll take what I can get, which in this case, was great.

I had to take a few liberties with this one, because while he did wake me up talking in his sleep about Civ. 4, it wasn’t anything as simple as “Aluminum”.  He talked about aluminum and his need to get it, or have it, or invent it or whatever, when he was fully conscious earlier in the week.  Clearly I was really listening to him too.

Anyway, the days of Civ. 4 are coming to a close as Adam worked a freelance day yesterday and also found out yesterday that he got a new job – starts Monday!  Congratulations to Adam…there’s not much work out there with the writer’s strike on, but any work he can get before things fully shut down is really good news, because it’s looking like this thing could go on for quite a while.  And we will be poorer than ever.  🙁

Sidenote:  We fully support the writer’s strike.  The production Adam is working on could get stopped at anytime because of the strike, but currently they already have finished scripts, so they can at least start production…or at least that’s my understanding of it.

This is a great little article, and I have to give Tim Kring props for being a man and admitting the failures of the show.  He pretty much hit all of them on the head – except he forgets to mention that the future evacuation/vaccination story is not super interesting because we saw something VERY similar last year – that said – if that was the only thing wrong with this season I’d be a pretty happy girl.

In case Tim Kring’s people are scouring the globe for brilliant thoughts on how to get us back on track, here’s a little list from me, the 1979 Semi-Finalist…

1.  KILL A LOT OF CHARACTERS.  The Wonder Twins should be the first to go, preferably painfully; West – really painfully; and either kill Micah’s cousin or replace her with a new actress or a new writing staff and lose the accent while you’re at it, she is just painful to watch, though her power is interesting.  Kill Nikki/Jessica (LONG overdue).  You have a beautiful canvas of characters.  Why overpopulate it with poorly developed new characters?  As fans we are so over the whole “learning about new characters” thing.  Maybe we could meet a new character or two over the course of the new Season, but five new “heroes” and another half dozen plus supporting characters in the first couple episodes?  Huge mistake.  Go back to the characters we love and let them grow and change.  Trust what you’ve already created.

2.  Lose the accents.  They’re great when done well, but they’re not being done well, and when every third character has one they lose their “specialness”.  Let Adam Monroe keep his, it’s the only convincing one anyway, and toss the rest.

3.  Bring back the old Claire.  She was occasionally whiney and bratty in Season 1, which is to be expected, she’s a whiney/bratty teen, but she’s out of control and unlikable this year.

4.  Pull back on the sappy drama and exposition.  Show what is happening to these people instead of letting them run off at the mouth with poorly written and poorly performed solioqy’s…it didn’t work for you the first season, and now it’s happening at a frightening clip this season and is working even less.

5.  Utilize your best actors.  I know there are plans for Kristen Bell, make them better and bigger.  While her role weeks ago was small and was a little cheesy, she’s a talented actor and did a better job of saving the bad writing than some of your less talented new actors (Wonder Twins, Copycat, etc.).

6.  Never send Hiro off on his own like that again.  He’s a great character, but he’s best in a lighter and somewhat comical role.  His bravery and idealism was refreshing last year…bring that element back to the character.  Let him grow in a more natural way.

7.  Stay away from romance unless you hire some people who really can handle it, both onscreen and in the writer’s room.  The romance has been the stuff of ridiculous after school specials and harlequinn romance.  Truly, it’s been painful to watch.

8.  Last but not least, stop being afraid of your powerful characters.  I know you have limits on budget and graphics etc., but there are plenty of clever ways to still allow your powerful characters (Sylar, Peter, etc.) to spread their wings on the show, without giving them annoying cliched amnesia or de-powering them.  Don’t be afraid, instead get creative.  Fortune favors the brave my friends.

I’m hanging in there, especially after reading Kring’s article…but please…implement change…save this show!
