Some CBR Reviews from last week – all great stuff this week – love it when it works out that way!

Wolverine & The X-Men #1

“Though the philosophical differences that drove “Schism” ultimately did not compel me, I still remained interested in what the after effects would bring in the form of a splintered X-Men on opposite coasts. The first offering comes this week in the first issue of Jason Aaron and Chris Bachalo’s “Wolverine & The X-Men.” Though the book’s name leaves much to be desired (does Wolverine really have to be splashed across everything?), everything else here is pretty damn interesting…”

Secret Avengers #18

“With “Secret Avengers” #18, Warren Ellis has brought me another comic book that I’m too stupid to fully comprehend but find myself loving anyway …”

Green Wake #6

“Green Wake” was a great little mini-series that has been upgraded into an ongoing series, much to everyone’s benefit. Extending a mini-series into an ongoing doesn’t always work, but there were so many mysteries in the first arc, it’s a pleasure to see Kurtis Wiebe and Riley Rossmo go back to this intriguing concept and dig deeper…”

As always, likes and retweets are awesome, and you can read all my CBR reviews thus far here.

A lot of great stuff this week…

Sharon Carter being absolutely awesome (and yelling Satan Claw!) by David Aja in Secret Avengers #18:

Shang-Chi being a complete badass courtesy of David Aja in Secret Avengers #18:

You could scan the entirety of Chris Bachalo’s Wolverine & The X-Men #1 for panel of the week and it would not be unreasonable.  But I like this one a lot – look at Wolvie’s face!  Also Bachalo’s art is also very hard to scan single panels form…so this is one the easier panels to scan in the issue…doesn’t make it any less awesome:

Also this, which I posted earlier this week, from Wolverine & The X-Men #1 is 100% awesome:

Nobody draws Wolverine better than Chris Bachalo, that alone is enough to merit a cover of the week for Wolverine & The X-Men #1:

Amazing David Aja alternate cover for Secret Avengers #18:

It was a very good week for awesome superhero chicks in the hands of some great writers and artists.  Too great to pick just one…check these out…

It’s no surprise really that some Cliff Chiang Wonder Woman is showing up.  You go Diana with your badass Amazon self.  From Wonder Woman #2:

This great panel by Brian Michael Bendis and Daniel Acuna from Avengers #18 is the kind of fly on the wall (no pun intended) superhero stuff I love, plus it’s gorgeous:

Jesus Saiz did so many fun things in Birds of Prey #2 this past week that I couldn’t pick just one.  First there’s this:

And then this one, which you have to give to both Saiz and writer Duane Swierczynski as it’s both the writing and art that really brings it home:

Same for this one…although you maybe need to know that Katana is talking to her sword, which she believes holds the soul of her dead husband.  I just love the joke about Starling’s tattoos:

Ryan Sook has been killing these DC Universe Presents covers with Deadman and issue #2 is no exception. In truth I liked it better when the background was more graphic and less detailed, but it’s still great:

Cliff Chiang continues to bring it with Diana on these Wonder Woman covers with issue #2:

I also really like this Daniel Acuna Avengers #18…but I’m a bit of a sucker for the idea of Captain America going through a bunch of headshots to choose his new Avengers team.  Bonus points for Rogue being considered. How far we’ve come my girl, how far we’ve come!  Course we all know it’s going to be Storm, but points for being on the table!

Woo! Comics!  Check out this awesome Valkyrie shit from Kev Walker and Secret Avengers #17 this week:

Last week a page of Wonder Woman awesomeness, now Valkyrie…who will it be next week?!

“Opening up “John Carter: A Princess of Mars” #1, I had no idea what I was getting into. A kinetic and incredibly fun Skottie Young cover, an intriguing title, and a (far too slight) familiarity with Edgar Rice Burroughs’ work suggested it was something I should try out, though, and I’m glad I did…”

WTF

I love Jim Cheung’s art, dude is a straight up badass.  But what on the motherfuckingplanet is the excuse for this crap with Rogue’s costume?  I mean…it’s just ABSURD.

The “Rogue costume problem” which went on for so long over the past year, has largely stopped.  I haven’t seen her unzipped, or at least not to unreasonable levels for a very long time.  So where THE HELL does this come from?  Man, this kind of silly crap makes me so frustrated with comics.

C’mon Mr. Cheung, you are SO MUCH BETTER THAN THIS.  What happened?!?!?

From CBR

Also, I thanked Derek in the tweet about this post for the heads up, but didn’t do so in the actual post.  Apologies Derek and thanks for the heads up!

I don’t know if there were really that many great covers this week, or if I’m just feeling indecisive…but I have a bunch this week.  Ironically in DC’s big first “52” week, only one of their covers makes my list:

Wolverine: Debt of Death by David Aja and Elizabeth Breitweizer:

Casanova: Avaritia #1 by Gabriel Ba:

The Punisher #3 by Brian Hitch:

Red Skull #3 by David Aja:

Animal Man #1 by Travel Foreman:
