wonder woman

I talked about this at length with DC Women Kicking Ass yesterday, and then came across this great ladies version of the DC 75th Anniversary logo today via Geektress.

I don’t know that I would have picked Black Canary – I think I’d go Wonder Woman, Batwoman, Supergirl, and perhaps…Catwoman.  Regardless the choice of using the tights (since Canary doesn’t have a logo) is pretty inspired from a “recognition” point of view as she’s instantly recognizable, but I have admit that I’m not wild about the idea that a character is recognizable via fishnets…that seems like a bit of a step backwards…but this is the reality we live in!

Anyway, I was going to do my own version…but I’m not sure I can do a better one than this (and who knows when it will shop up) but this has inspired me to at least try.  We’ll see!

A new She Has No Head! about Ben Caldwell’s YA Wonder Woman Pitch, and the need for mainstream comics to court new readers, and women readers, is up.

I cannot contain my excitement over reading Ben Caldwell’s Wonder Woman pitch to DC.  C’mon DC, take a chance, this is some really exciting wonderful beautiful stuff…it could jump start a whole trend. You can read more here on Caldwell’s blog as well.

As I’ve said before…capturing women readers, most especially young women readers, is a huge challenge, but the rewards will be so great if anyone can manage it (did you know girls and women make up approximately 80% of fiction readership?) the spoils will be seriously significant.  Just because Minx didn’t quite work, or Manga stuff is getting pulled, or Wonder Woman’s ongoing title isn’t crazy successful, or “kids books are loss leaders” doesn’t mean the right combination of those things won’t work – i.e. the most powerful female superhero of all time with a dynamic female friendly beautiful art style, a fresh perspective and look, free of heavy continuity, in a book that comes out as a digest and might be easily found at the grocery store check out next to Archies…sounds like an insanely winning combination.  And the kind of thing that would have alerted someone like me to superheroes very early on…instead of having to wait until I discovered the X-Men cartoon at 16.

Yes, it’s a risk, yes it might not work, but if it does the pay off is HUGE.  Fortune favors the brave and all that DC.  You should give it a chance, put the full force of DC behind it, commit to it, just do it…and see what happens. The first comic book company to figure this out (how to capture and keep women readers) are going to be freaking kings…don’t you want another shot at that?

A new SHE HAS NO HEAD! is up, a detailed review of Wonder Woman #600.  And yes, I talk a bit about the costume.  Woo!

A Jamie McKelvie designed Wonder Woman that, for my money, is hands and feet above the Lee re-design. It's effortless and modern, streamlined and clean. But it still FEELS Wonder Woman

To all my American readers…here’s a “classic” Wonder Woman 5 Minute Marvel sketch I did for Grace’s birthday.  What says “go America” more than stars on the ass of your swimsuit? Happy 4th!

I mean I’m torn…do I want Diana out of her super impractical strapless swimsuit bustier?  Of course I do.  Do I want her to be in some cheesy garish 90’s jacket/pants/bustier combo that has no lasting iconic imagery?  No…no I do not.  I’m all for having Diana a bit more covered up and practical…but this is a swing and a miss for me.

I wish DC would have pitched this to Project Runway.  They already did some great Wonder Woman designs when it was just for fun, imagine the response they would have gotten if DC was genuinely looking for a re-design.

Also…Corey Walker probably could have done this in his sleep.  He’s done about 154 Supergirl designs over the last year or so and most of them are fantastic.

I mean…from an iconic standpoint how does it compare to something like Batman…?  Wonder Woman deserves more.  I’m bummed out.  In fairness, I think DC is trying…I just think this is a failure that should have been left on the drawing room floor.  I don’t suppose this means the new #600 JMS reboot (which releases Wednesday) is doomed…but it certainly doesn’t bode well for me at least and I was pretty hesitant to begin with.  Le sigh.  Another day in comics.

Welcome to the first Sketch-A-Day post.  Learn more about the rules of and inspiration for Sketch-A-Day here.

What is it: Wonder Woman!  I’ve been in a Wonder Woman mood lately so she seemed the obvious choice.

How long it took: 9 minutes start to finish

How many sketches I did today: 3

Total time spent sketching: 36 minutes

Materials used: My Wacom Bamboo tablet, Illustrator, and Photoshop (for clean up).

Other notes/details: The sketch was done freehand with no base drawing to “ink” from.

What I like about it: I really like the looseness of it and the sketch-y exaggerated proportions.  I like the overall feel of it quite a bit.  It feels fun.

What I dislike about it: My lack of skills with the Wacom tablet are obvious – there is little ability yet to do anything but something loose and sketchy – i.e. the hands look like little claw bits.  Also, the face looks pretty dead and non-specific (that isn’t the expression I had in mind – I wanted something a little more playful) and doesn’t benefit from the fun looseness of the rest of it.

New She Has No Head! column up at CSBG.  All about Wonder Woman and my long standing attempts to fall in love with her.  Did it work?  Click to find out.

Thanks to everyone that sent in their postcard.

We more than met the 600 required postcards by the October 31st deadline and today Dan Didio honored his promise and announced that in the new year Wonder Woman will get renumbered to #600 moving forward.  Nice work fans.  See?  Sometimes things do change. Almost never…but occasionally.  So pat yourselves on the back and get back to work on the next thing… :)

Last week’s DC Nation page featured a Wonder Woman renumbering controversy that fans of Wonder Woman hold dear to their heart – the issue is this – Why the hell is the preeminent female superhero of the DC Universe currently on issue #45 while Superman and Batman are edging towards #700?

Wonder Woman, like her Justice League teammates has actually had just short of 600 issues, however her title has been relaunched so many times that she’s now “technically” only on issue #45 of her latest relaunch.  And there’s been a campaign going on to get her the recognition she’s earned.  Well the fan cries have been heard because last week Editor-In-Chief Dan Didio addressed the issue in DC Nation and gave fans an opportunity to actually make a difference:  send in a postcard in favor of Wonder Woman getting renumbered to #600 and if they receive 600 postcards, it will be done.

Now, I hate blogging about Wonder Woman because I always feel a bit like a wolf in sheep’s clothing as I’m really not a true fan.  I keep trying…I WANT to love her so badly.  But no writer has been able to make it happen for me yet.  So why should I bother blogging about this issue?  Three reasons.

1.  I think it’s great when DC (or any corporation) actively wants to listen to their fans – and truly gives them an opportunity to voice opposition or approval and affect change, as Dan Didio is doing with this postcard pledge.

2. I’m not a big fan of revamping and “relaunching” books in general, so I see this as a way to right those wrongs.  Not that books don’t sometimes need an update, or when they’ve gone horribly wrong, don’t deserve (or yearn for) a fresh start, but I’m pretty against starting off with an “ALL NEW FIRST ISSUE!” every time things get tough.  I understand that it gets people excited and likely sales briefly spike, I get it, but as a long time reader I’m not a fan.  It makes being a reader (and a collector) a huge pain.

“You’re talking about issue #3 right?  Oh, wait, which issue #3…would that be volume 1, volume 2, the super secret alternative arc volume 8?  ARGH!”

And I do believe it’s some of that madness that freaks other “normal” people (i.e. non comics fans) out and away from comics.  Comics are DAMN complicated.  And they don’t have to be.  Sure, relaunch a title with a new creative team…but you don’t have to call it “ALL NEW WONDER WOMAN ISSUE #1” and undo the last 200 or however many issues.

There are of course cases where relaunching a book with an all new #1 has worked and been a huge benefit, not just in sales but in content and direction, but in general I’m not a fan, especially when the character isn’t changing.  For example, though I’m personally not a fan of the ALL NEW Batgirl #1 relaunch,  it makes sense for that to be a new series in a way, because it’s a new character.  Sure it’s still Batgirl, but it’s no longer Cass Cain (much to my chagrin) so I find that more palatable. But Wonder Woman, in all her incantations over the years, is still Diana.  And she earned the hell out of that #600.

3.  I’m a feminist.  Whether Wondy and I have come to love each other or not, she still deserves the same recognition as her teammates.  And I think it’s only fair to acknowledge that as a female superhero, she’s actually had a much harder time becoming a success than Superman and Batman, and yet she has prevailed and stood the test of time.  She deserves the recognition of each one of those issues she struggled for.

Didio made a decent point in his argument that he thinks the #45 is less off putting to possible new fans than the #600, but I just don’t think it’s really that much less off putting.  45 issues is still nearly four years of issues – so it’s not like it’s issue #3 or something and you can just jump on board with zero drama.

Anyway, if you agree with me, or if you have your own reasons.  Send a postcard in to Dan Didio at DC proclaiming that you want Wonder Woman to start renumbering at #600.  My postcard is in the mail.  See?
