Woo. Been very busy. Here’s some stuff I’ve been up to, please check out anything that appeals to you! :)

I wrote about The Hunger Games for Lit Reactor. It went up yesterday and it’s a “Book vs. Film” piece…so you just know that’s going to be fun!

Oh yeah, I reviewed some book you guys might have heard about – Avengers vs. X-Men #1 — for CBR, it’s up now.

I wrote a review last week for CBR for The New Deadwardians #1, which was excellent, and I urge you to check out the book.

I also wrote a review for Daredevil #10, which if you’re not on board with already, you should get on now! Very good stuff.

I was a guest on the excellent Hideous Energy podcast last week to talk more about Wonder Woman #7 and a bunch of other awesome (and not awesome) things – it’s one of my favorite podcasts yet – so please give a listen!

All of you know how I love (and hate) comic book covers, so if you haven’t already, make sure to check out this week’s She Has No Head! which features 25 of the best superheroine comic covers of the past year.

OH! And I got this 100 kinds of awesome nomination from Hooded Utilitarian for “Best Online Comics Criticism for 2012”…I’m pretty much in there among giants, so it’s just an honor to be mentioned in the same post with them.

I’ve mentioned before that I have an essay called “I am Sisyphus, and I am Happy” in the new book Chicks Dig Comics from Mad Norwegian Press, a certain 3 Chicks Review Comics co-host also has a piece in the book and we are sandwiched in there with some truly epic people including Gail Simone, Jill Thompson, Colleen Doran, Marjorie Liu, Greg Rucka, Mark Waid, Jen Van Meter, Carla Speed McNeil, Terry Moore, Jill Pantozzi, and so many more! So check that out if you haven’t already – it releases on April 10th.

Oh, and a new Audioshocker “Podcast with Ross & Nick” is up – I chat with Nick and Ross about “continuous on-tap properties” and fans reactions to them.

And of COURSE you all have your copies of Womanthology, right?!

For those of you that have expressed interest in my experience with my novel – the writing of it, the query process, securing an agent, shopping the book to publishers, and beyond – look no further!  The first in a series of essays about my experiences with my first novel (once upon a time called Superhero Junkies) is up on Lit Reactor.

The Long & Winding Road: Part 1 – Writing The Novel

I hope you all enjoy it, and for those of you engaged in some phase of novel writing, that it might also be helpful. Enjoy and as always – comments, likes, and retweets are much appreciated!

Hey Everyone!

Just wanted to give you a heads up that the Womanthology Preview is up on CBR. And since “SuperLess Hero” the story by Stephanie Hans and yours truly, is the first story in the book, you can actually read our story in its entirety in the preview!

Thanks for all the support and positive thoughts that you have all offered and continue to offer! Enjoy!

So, I’ve begun writing columns for Lit Reactor, a really great site for writers (and readers) that’s full of wonderful columns, as well as resources for writers.  I’ll be primarily writing about comics, tag teaming it with another columnist.  However, I’ll also be writing a series of essays about my experiences with my novel and getting an agent, so for those of you interested in that aspect of my work, those pieces might be something a little different.

My first piece, titled 10 Graphic Novels For The Literary Minded went up today, so check it out now.  Next week will see the first installment of my essay about publication (or lack thereof!).  So follow Lit Reactor on twitter, and keep your eyes peeled for my pieces.

Thanks everyone!

Woo!

So I told you guys I would check back in and let you know when I hit “the end” and last night, that very good thing happened.

It happened a good 10,000 words later than I wanted it to happen, but it happened notheless.

Final word count for this FINISHED draft is 119,431.

I’m going to need a week or two to clean it up, correct inconsistencies, and do some general “prettying up”…but otherwise it’s going out to my writing group and a handful of wonderful betas in the next couple weeks.  Thanks again to all of you that were so supportive while I powered through this thing in a month.  It was awesome…though I admit I am CRAZY EXHAUSTED with the mental capacity of a box of hair.

As a fun experiment, I decided to pull together a collage of all the images I posted over the last month that I drew some inspiration from for the book.  In the end, it’s only 29 images because one was throwing everything off and seemed redundant anyway, so I deleted it.  Anyway…here it is.  Hopefully any of you interested will get the opportunity to read this book someday…thanks again!

The Womanthology Tumblr is doing some wonderful previews of the book.  And today Stephanie Hans and my story, SuperLess Hero went up.  Head on over to see the first two pages!  And keep going back to see more as pages continue to go up.

Also, I’m pretty sure SuperLess Hero is the first story in the book…which is pretty damn awesome.

Hey kids.  So here, we are, 30 days later.  I hope you all had as much success as I did.  This was an incredible month for me, because while I am exhausted (and not quite done) I absolutely destroyed my goals – cruising past 50k on Day 21, and ending up with an insane 75k+ words written this month.

And honestly…that is JUST for my novel.  I also wrote 9 comic book reviews, 2 She Has No Head! columns, 2 podcast write ups, 2 editions of Drunk Cover Solicits, an essay about Wonder Woman for the DC Women Kicking Ass Kick Ass Contest, and a slew of other smaller posts for 1979.  That, altogether has got to be at least 15k – 20k, easy.  So that means I wrote nearly 100k this month…outside of my full time job. Insane. Now, I will say that my personal life has been a sad little husk of a thing…so I don’t think this is a healthy way to live…but, it can still be a good guideline of how much I am really capable of when I put my mind to it…and could perhaps help me figure out what a reasonable goal would be for a more ongoing basis.

Thanks to all of you that encouraged me, and I hope for those of you that took on NaNo yourselves (officially, or unofficially as I did) are happy with your successes and failures.  If I’ve learned anything it’s that it’s all a process.  I know for a fact some of you out there just killed it…but for others, there’s always next time, and even if you didn’t meet 50k, you’re still X number of words beyond where you were four short weeks ago…so just keep going.

Anyway, for posterity’s sake, I’ll put up a post when I hit “the end” on this puppy (shooting for Saturday) so that those of you that have been playing along can feel closure too. :) But for now, here are the final counts…

Today’s word count: 2,943

MS total word count:  110,495

Total NaNo word count: 75,995

Things are coming together people!  Figured out a major issue I’ve been having with the climax (large thanks to Adam who is always a life saver with plot issues and creativity in general) and I’m feeling much more confident as we head into the final day here.  Given my schedule I don’t think I’ll finish tomorrow (end of NaNo) but I think I’ll be done by Friday/Saturday, at which point I can go in and pretty things up and correct errors, etc.  Still much longer than I wanted this draft to be…but it is what it is, right?

Today’s word count: 3,279

MS total word count: 107,552

Closing in on the end of NaNo, just two days left.  I had a good day today and a decent word count total, even though I had to delete and rework some stuff.  Still feeling damn lousy, but getting OH SO CLOSE on finishing this puppy, which is good good good.

Today’s word count:  4,263

MS total word count: 104,273

Too young for my character, but otherwise a good look overall

Had such high hopes for today…even had delusional dreams of finishing.  Ah, delusional sickness…how you lead me astray!

Still, clocked in a good number of words…in fact, best/biggest day ever…so SILVER LININGS. Also, I have GOT to be getting close.  Must be within 10k of writing “the goddamn end” on this puppy.

Today’s word count:  5.580

MS total word count: 100,010
