You want to know what I do with your inserts and “cardboard-like” pages in favorite magazines of mine?

I tear them out.  That’s right, the first thing I do when I get a new magazine is furiously tear our all these little obstructions to my reading.

Guess what else?  Sometimes I even look at what they are and make a mental note to NEVER buy that product or subscribe to that service etc.  That’s right.  I know it hurts…but it’s true.  Also, you should know that I’m not alone in this.  I know MANY people who do exactly the same thing.  Maybe they’re not as angry and grumbly as me when they do it, but they do it.  So I don’t know what your PR/Advertising/Marketing department is telling you, but they’re idiots.  The “people” do not like you, or your methods.

You know what else we don’t like?  The pop ups on our TV screens that interrupt the bottom third (sometimes bottom half) of the TV screen when we’re trying to watch a program.  We especially don’t like this when we happen to be watching subtitled and cannot read what is happening on our program…or when god forbid there is actually something important going on in the bottom third of the screen – I know that seems crazy – CRAZY that the whole screen would actually be important, but it is…so you should know we’re pretty pissed about this new development.  I know you’re all really frustrated because we’ve found a loophole in your ridiculous commercials scheme by buying things like Tivos and DVR’s and fast forwarding through all ad space, but you should know this, I don’t buy, watch, or support any show that advertise this way.  It’s my only silent protest (slightly less silent now that I’m talking about it).

Okay, that’s all for today.  Thanks for listening.

Seriously, maybe it’s just the neighborhood (although it’s pretty much the same 10 block radius I do everything in) but without fail I get attempted pick ups after therapy, no matter how lousy (or good) I might be feeling that day.  What’s up with that?  This is one of my favorite cartoons thus far, mostly because it was fun drawing the girl in panel 3, I forget how much I like drawing women when they aren’t me.

So back when I was reading about AFI’s Top 100 Movies Of All Time, I suggested I might do my own countdown.  I figure the time to do it is now, in the four weeks before the end of 2007, so I’ll be counting down from 100 every Monday for the next four weeks, making my top 25 posting on Monday, December 31st.

As always, I not only welcome, but revel in getting comments, but please, especially if you’re new to this blog, let’s not rant at me at what horrible taste I have in movies.  I think anyone’s list of movies is pretty debatable and subject to criticism as people have very different tastes, I am no different.  And really, what the differences would be between my list and a “respectable” AFI list is what interested me in the idea in the first place.

I tried to be really honest…I knew when putting down Citizen Kane, that the higher it goes, the more respect I might get for my list, but the reality is that while it’s a great film,  it doesn’t speak too powerfully to me specifically.  It was especially difficult to weigh movies with the same criteria from different categories (e.g. drama, comedy, horror), you’ll notice that there are few comedies on here…that’s not because I don’t love a great comedy, but I think it is because it is exceedingly difficult to make a timeless five star comedy.

Last but not least, there are many great films that I have yet to see in this life (there are currently 413 movies in my netflix queue if that tells you anything) so if something is glaringly missing, it may just be that it’s brilliant and I have yet to get to it.

This really was a horrible thing to happen…and I’m sorry it’s such a cryptic and annoying cartoon, I didn’t actually want to write/draw about it, but it was so present on my mind I really just couldn’t escape it.  I’m shocked to find supposedly intelligent adults in the world who are so closed minded and hateful…and just horrible little people.  I don’t know why I’m surprised, I should know better by now, but I suppose I am eternally naively hopeful that people will get a freaking clue and be better.  I was an angry and sad emotional mess all weekend as a result of this event (lucky Adam!).  What a waste.

Oh, and apologies for the especially piss poor art in today’s strip, my hand is still cramped from a weekend of addressing and writing work and personal holiday cards and my back is still sore making it difficult to sit and draw for too long at any one time. Now that some things have been cleared from my plate I’m hoping to do a better job…we’ll see.

kt-_032-comic.jpg

This is no exaggeration.  We are (and by we I mean I) are doing about 200 handmade holiday cards for our office…and by handmade I mean the paper is handcut into 11×17 sheets from a larger watercolor sheet (35×50 I think) and then a beautiful drawing done by one of our (my) designers was scanned (supposedly color corrected) and will be printed onto these sheets, which will then be hand cut in half horizontally, then hand folded, then hand sealed with real wax (from an actual melting pot – I kid you not), then hand stuffed into envelopes, which I will have (by then) hand addressed and hand stamped with our name/address on the back flap with a rubber stamp and a custom designed postage stamp on the front (which has been the only easy and flawless part of the project thus far).  Oh yeah, and I’m writing a short message inside to everyone.  I am going INSANE.

Also, they’re supposed to go out by Tuesday…Wednesday at the latest.  AH!  I did handmade holiday cards last year for our office, but it was closer to 170, and the design and execution, though work intensive was much easier.  They went over well, and we are a DESIGN firm, so we thought we should make the effort again this year (it’s good PR I hope).  The card is much more impressive as an overall package this year and I’m more excited about the results however I’m currently feeling (especially with our color correction issues) that I have bitten off way more than is ever possible to chew.  Ick.

Oh, and I also get to do my own personal cards this weekend…yea!  And by “yea!”, I mean “by the love of god NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

So I’m sure anyone who reads this blog regularly has already guessed that when I stopped posting my daily NaNoWriMo updates (about a week into November) I had stopped working.  This is both true and not true.  The whole truth is that while I netted less than 10,000 words in the month of November on my book, NaNoWritMo (the way I was doing it -which was not the correct way anyway) turned out to be incredibly effective for me.  While I did not net a whole novel in a month, or even close to one, I was thinking about it so much that I solved several of the storytelling and plot issues I had been LONG struggling with (like a year plus of struggling).

I spent so much time thinking about the book (Lola LeFever) that I did have some major breakthroughs and I think I know how to write both Lola and the third and final installment in the trilogy (still untitled) when I finally carve out some time.  So, success through failure.  Yea!  Perhaps that should be my motto in life…it’s almost as accurate as my “semi-finalist” blog title.

Thanks for caring…if you did.  And for not calling me out as a hack-failure when I stopped updating 🙂

I am the queen of internet shopping.  Hopefully it is the thought…and not the EFFORT that necessarily counts.  I do try to think outside the box and get fun, relevant, and sometimes unexpected things for friends and family…I also always overspend, perhaps in an effort to offset the fact that I’m unwilling to fight the crowds?

kt-_030-comic.jpg

I love all those old holiday shows, my favorite of course is the traditional Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer and The Charlie Brown Christmas special, but there is something less fun and exciting about tivo’ing them and watching them whenever than just happening to chance upon them…but I guess I’m a busy girl compared to how I was as a child because without tivo’ing them I expect I’d never catch them.  The shine is also a bit off the penny as part of the experience was watching them with my brothers…that is a great memory, and while Adam indulges me and will generally watch with me, he doesn’t enjoy them as I do, so it’s not really the same.

I’m especially excited this year to go home and see my brothers though, because I tracked down a copy of Emmett Otter’s Jug Band Christmas last year on dvd for us to watch this year…this was an old favorite of ours by Jim Henson’s group and they don’t replay it often (or ever?) like the other specials…so it will be fun to take that trip down memory lane.  I’ll let you know if it holds up after all these years.

This one is true too…he was actually already in his jeans by the time I caught him, but the idea of drawing someone putting on jeans made me want to hurl…thus you get a pair of socks in his hand.  I sometimes want to be Adam because when he sleeps it is just like the world is dead to him…yeah, it’s like the blissful sleep of the dead…however, I don’t want people chuckling at me at 3:00am (even if it is in love) so perhaps I’m better off as the light sleeper and he’s better off as the heavy sleeper…since he doesn’t seem to care about anything except getting back in the bed.  I should start an ongoing series called “Nocturnal Adam” or something…

I love how, despite the fact that I basically traced my face three times from the same image, it looks totally different in each frame.  And by love, I mean HATE.

I’ll try to keep the comics this week at a reasonably decent level, but…no promises.
