No contest this week (assuming this actually came out, I wasn’t able to get it).  Skottie Young’s Ozma of Oz#3, which will definitely be on my short list for covers of the year.  Of the books I actually bought I have to say it was a plethora of mediocrity.  Until I realized Ozma of Oz came out this week and just wasn’t in my pile I was at a loss for how I would pick one winner out of this pile of not so good – ironically so far I’m enjoying the insides quite a bit…just not the covers…

Weird.

And with that we’re caught up!

I love this Jock cover for Detective #872.  Love everything about it.  Slam dunk.

There was so much wall to wall awesome in Kaare Andrews work in Astonishing X-Men Xenogenesis #4 that I just had to share a FEW bits.

First…HOLY HELL WOLVERINE!

HOLY CUTENESS WOLVERINE (and Armor!):

And then something that is just damn good comics, even though Wolverine isn’t involved.  For those that don’t already know, the character pictured (Armor) has an armor-like exoskeleton that she fights in and which protects her from just about everything…apparently except the thing she’s fighting now…and it is freaking TERRIFYING to watch.  Really good comics that make you go “OH MY GOD” while you read.  *slow clap* Nice work Ellis and Andrews, nice work.

Awesome, yes?

Still catching up…my favorite panel(s) from 12/22/10…

Panel #1. A completely ordinary panel from Zatanna #8 by Cliff Chiang.  And it is the very “ordinariness” of it that makes it spectacular.  If only more comics could be like this!  Chiang’s attention to detail in the way Zatanna is rendered from her hairstyle down to her clothing choices (which also actually look like clothing – with real folds and everything!).  I wish this wasn’t extraordinary…but it SO is.  Also, for anyone out there listening…I would buy almost any book that Chiang was the regular pencilier on…bonus points if it has a female lead as he is EXTRA good at that.  Wonderful!

Panel #2.  Do I really need to explain why this panel from Yanick Paquette’s Batman Inc. #2 is totally awesome?  No, I probably don’t.  AWESOME.

Playing a little catch up here from while I was away and not picking up or reading my weeklies…

This was a pretty unimpressive cover week for me, as I don’t think this Streets of Gotham #18 by Dustin Nguyen is his best work and it’s still easily the best of what I got this week.

Cass Cain vs Shiva in Batgirl #25

DC Women Kicking Ass has been running a fantastic series of posts spotlighting the top moments from her poll last month for “most memorable moments for the women of the DCU” and in anticipation of upcoming voting for the top moments of the last 75 years of DC Comics.

It’s a great idea to spotlight these moments in such a way and with the guest writers on board – it’s quite a sight – so far comics badasses Greg Rucka, Gail Simone, Phil Jimenez, Mike Madrid and Bryan Q. Miller among other great writers and bloggers have contributed.

It’s a rare treat to see creators writing passionately about these characters and moments.

As of today we’re on moment #11, and you should really check out the series.  I’d say you should take a look because yours truly wrote about moment #10 – the defeat of Shiva by Cassandra Cain in Batgirl #25 – but with talents like Rucka, Simone, and Miller on board, well, I think we all know who the A-listers are! 😉

But I was honored to particpate and urge you to read about all these wonderful women and wonderful moments.
