5 Minute Marvels!

I wish I could say I discovered it on my own, but it was brought to my attention by site co-creator Tim Miner.

5 Minute Marvels began simply with Tim’s six year old daughter Grace drawing superheroes every night before bedtime.  Once she asked her dad to join her, something he hadn’t done in nearly twenty years, a new tradition was born.  Every night for five minutes before bedtime Tim and his two daughters Grace (6) and Cate (4) draw superheroes, and in that five minutes a lot of quality time happens, not to mention some pretty great results.

Grace and Cate’s Scarlet Witch is my personal favorite:

I love how Grace got Wanda’s curly red hair, and Cate’s creative use of the pointy red aspect of Wanda’s headpiece…it’s actually fascinating I think to see her inclusion of it into the face.  Great stuff ladies!

Tim’s story of how this all got started, and his invitation for everyone to get involved can be found here.

I don’t actually have any kids to draw with, but Tim and his lovely girls agreed to draw my favorite heroine from when I was a kid, Rogue, so that I could participate remotely.  Below are all of our Rogue versions.  I have to say, it was the most fun drawing (even without a child present) that I’d had in a long time.  I’d recommend this to anyone that has kids (or even if you don’t)…and if you do try it out, make sure to send your results in to Tim so he can post them on 5 Minute Marvels.

Tim mentioned that Cate (far left) saw Rogue’s white stripe as a star, but noted that she was too tired to draw a star, so she just went with a cross.  Hilariously cute!  Here’s my Five Minute Rogue…an old school (sorta) punky Rogue version:

Thanks for letting me participate you guys –  I had a great time!  Spread the word everyone…let’s get a whole new family tradition going.

Happy Birthday to my brother Scott – 30 years old today.  He’s the one dragging Dave across the carpet, while Dave apparently does an impersonation of Christ.

So thanks Dave.  Thanks a lot.

I hope you all have great weekends ahead of you.  As my writing deadline fast approaches (11 days!) I will be buckling down, I hope like never before, to write write write.  I plan to take a break Sunday and go to a movie and dinner with Adam after my writing group.

I’m currently trying to talk myself out of going to a special midnight screening of a new 35 mm print of The Crow that is screening at the Sunshine theater Friday and Saturday nights…sounds like some good relaxing fun (I freaking love that movie and would love to see a new print) but I just think it will throw me off and the next thing you know I’ll be having fun left and right…

I actually got off the hook pretty lightly this year, which felt kind of wrong, and only wrapped maybe a dozen presents that weren’t from me.  This is good because every year my body enjoys being cramped up on the floor for a couple hours less and less.  Although that makes me feel as if I should ALWAYS volunteer, because if I don’t like doing it for my body’s sake, how must my parents feel.

Anyway, for those of you celebrating Christmas, Merry Christmas to you.  For those of you celebrating something else, but having Christmas off since we live in America which loves to really only recognize and celebrate Judeo-Christian holidays (and let’s face it, mostly the latter part of that word only) – enjoy the well deserved break, assuming you get one, and if you don’t then an extra Season’s Greetings, because it sucks to work when everyone else is lying around eating too much and watching bad holiday programming.

Wish me luck…flying today!  Good luck to all of you, especially if you’re traveling over the holidays.

See you tomorrow, with a journal comic fresh from Salt Lake City Utah (no, I’m not a mormon.  Yes, I know that was what you were thinking.  How do I know?  Because that is the first thing that pops into everyone’s mind.)

I can’t really even believe this news.  It’s just disgusting.  I’m sure The Count will be out soon for being a VAMPIRE.  And Big Bird will be out soon for being too tall and too yellow, and Grover will be out for kind of being an idiot (though one of my favorites), Bert and Ernie will surely be elimintated for being obviously gay, and if not obviously gay then possibly gay…which is of course just as horrible.  I think we should all try (except comedians perhaps…we need something to be okay to be funny right?) to be as understanding and sympathetic and non-judgmental as possible in life…but Politically Correct has become a machine that just cannot be stopped.  If there is ONE SINGLE FREAKING CHILD that has an eating disorder or I guess…”greediness” that can be traced to The Cookie Monster, and only the Cookie Monster, then I take all this back.  But there is just NO WAY that is possible…it’s a freaking Muppet!  Kids get their influences from all over the place and it’s more likely they are learning bad habits (oh my god the end of the world) from home and parents than from a muppet that doesn’t even exist.

Read more about all this nonesense here.  And Gillian Anderson…I like you, but how dare you contribute to the removal of the Cookie Monster (in any way) by accepting the job hosting the new “improved” revamped Monsterpiece Theater sans the star.

I am the queen of internet shopping.  Hopefully it is the thought…and not the EFFORT that necessarily counts.  I do try to think outside the box and get fun, relevant, and sometimes unexpected things for friends and family…I also always overspend, perhaps in an effort to offset the fact that I’m unwilling to fight the crowds?

I love all those old holiday shows, my favorite of course is the traditional Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer and The Charlie Brown Christmas special, but there is something less fun and exciting about tivo’ing them and watching them whenever than just happening to chance upon them…but I guess I’m a busy girl compared to how I was as a child because without tivo’ing them I expect I’d never catch them.  The shine is also a bit off the penny as part of the experience was watching them with my brothers…that is a great memory, and while Adam indulges me and will generally watch with me, he doesn’t enjoy them as I do, so it’s not really the same.

I’m especially excited this year to go home and see my brothers though, because I tracked down a copy of Emmett Otter’s Jug Band Christmas last year on dvd for us to watch this year…this was an old favorite of ours by Jim Henson’s group and they don’t replay it often (or ever?) like the other specials…so it will be fun to take that trip down memory lane.  I’ll let you know if it holds up after all these years.
