This is maybe the most true and accurate comic I have produced to date.

Sadly this year it means we will not be going anywhere for our anniversary (4 years!).  The irony is that at one point or another we invariably manage to convince the other of our opinion, but at the same time the we have come around to their opinion, and so we still manage to be on opposite sides.

It is endlessly frustrating…and agonizing.  Here we are trying to do something nice for each other and yet we simply cannot agree on the best way to do it.  We have had some amazing trips in our lives (San Francisco/San Luis Obispo, New Hampshire/Maine, and Hawaii instantly spring to mind) but we may have to live on memories as it seems to become more and more difficult to agree.  I suppose this is the (other) downside to trying to live harmoniously as two alpha personalities…we’re both “too strong” to just live peacefully together.

This is no exaggeration.  We are (and by we I mean I) are doing about 200 handmade holiday cards for our office…and by handmade I mean the paper is handcut into 11×17 sheets from a larger watercolor sheet (35×50 I think) and then a beautiful drawing done by one of our (my) designers was scanned (supposedly color corrected) and will be printed onto these sheets, which will then be hand cut in half horizontally, then hand folded, then hand sealed with real wax (from an actual melting pot – I kid you not), then hand stuffed into envelopes, which I will have (by then) hand addressed and hand stamped with our name/address on the back flap with a rubber stamp and a custom designed postage stamp on the front (which has been the only easy and flawless part of the project thus far).  Oh yeah, and I’m writing a short message inside to everyone.  I am going INSANE.

Also, they’re supposed to go out by Tuesday…Wednesday at the latest.  AH!  I did handmade holiday cards last year for our office, but it was closer to 170, and the design and execution, though work intensive was much easier.  They went over well, and we are a DESIGN firm, so we thought we should make the effort again this year (it’s good PR I hope).  The card is much more impressive as an overall package this year and I’m more excited about the results however I’m currently feeling (especially with our color correction issues) that I have bitten off way more than is ever possible to chew.  Ick.

Oh, and I also get to do my own personal cards this weekend…yea!  And by “yea!”, I mean “by the love of god NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

I am the queen of internet shopping.  Hopefully it is the thought…and not the EFFORT that necessarily counts.  I do try to think outside the box and get fun, relevant, and sometimes unexpected things for friends and family…I also always overspend, perhaps in an effort to offset the fact that I’m unwilling to fight the crowds?

I love all those old holiday shows, my favorite of course is the traditional Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer and The Charlie Brown Christmas special, but there is something less fun and exciting about tivo’ing them and watching them whenever than just happening to chance upon them…but I guess I’m a busy girl compared to how I was as a child because without tivo’ing them I expect I’d never catch them.  The shine is also a bit off the penny as part of the experience was watching them with my brothers…that is a great memory, and while Adam indulges me and will generally watch with me, he doesn’t enjoy them as I do, so it’s not really the same.

I’m especially excited this year to go home and see my brothers though, because I tracked down a copy of Emmett Otter’s Jug Band Christmas last year on dvd for us to watch this year…this was an old favorite of ours by Jim Henson’s group and they don’t replay it often (or ever?) like the other specials…so it will be fun to take that trip down memory lane.  I’ll let you know if it holds up after all these years.

That’s the real problem with Thanksgving…if it was just one day of pigging out it wouldn’t be so deadly, but there are leftovers for just days and days and days…

Hope you all had a great one.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I don’t know about Adam, but I’m going to try to starve myself so that we can have a shot at eating a tenth of what we prepare today…I at least need a taste of everything, after all that slaving. That’s another thing, after spending all day in the kitchen preparing the food, I always find I’ve got less of an appetite for it. I guess just looking at food and having your hands in it for hours on end is not so great for the appetite…good for the figure…not so good for the appetite.

I decided to make butternut squash souffle instead of sweet potato souffle, mostly due to a shopping error, and it’s a first time for that, so we’ll see how it turns out. The homemade dressing (my mother’s recipe) is really the thing I wait all year for…mmmm.

Anyway, have a Happy Thanksgiving everyone, I hope you are all lucky enough to be with loved ones, be it friends or family…and if it’s the latter I hope you are able to retain your sanity and maybe escape from them later today to a quiet corner with a book…
