Here’s what this is about!

A lot on my plate again today finishing a Lit Reactor column, recording 3 Chicks with Sue, editing and prepping 3 Chicks, reading the script for a friend’s graphic novel so I can give him notes (woo!), plus one of the only nights of TV I find myself interested in – Girls! The Good Wife! The Walking Dead (the missing exclamation mark is not a mistake there…the show is better but still fucking hit and miss). So yeah, again, not enough words put down on “paper” but I’m still really pleased with the momentum. The ideas are good, the outline is feeling really smart, and what’s coming out feels strong. Onward!

Favorite thing from today: Soren (she rocked it)

Here’s what this is about.

Today was another disappointing day from a word count standpoint, but I made awesome headway on fleshing out my outline and I’m pleased with a lot of the ideas that came from it.

Today’s word count: 521

Total word count: 1,429

My favorite thing in today’s writing: Well, it was a structural breakthrough, which is not so fun to list here, but I will say something that helped that structural breakthrough was the song “Buried In Water” by Dead Man’s Bones. Which, if you haven’t heard it, is AWESOME.

And so it begins!

I’m starting off with between 5 and 10k already down, but just for my own ease I’m going to start counting at zero. Today I had a lot of other writing due (comics reviews, woo!) and some big developments (that were awesome but time consuming) as well as a friend’s band to go see…so not as much time as I hoped for, but that’s the way it goes…excuses, excuses and all that noise.

Today’s word count: 908

Total word count: 908

Favorite thing created: The Phantom

Inspirational Image for today:

Louis le Brocquy’s The Morrigan (from his Tain illustrations, 1969)

And we begin, quite appropriately, with one of the inspirational images that started it all, way back when I was working on THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING.

Okay, so I’m doing my own version of MARCH MADNESS combined with NANOWRIMO (in March)…we’re calling it Novel Madness! And it begins tomorrow! Woo!

I’m basically going to be tracking the progress of my new novel (as I did in 2011 for NaNoWriMo), and with the hopes of finishing a first strong draft of this new book within a month. See, I have a new book (unrelated to TGWWBK) that’s going out on submission to publishers via my agent very soon (that same aforementioned NaNo 2011 project), but I want to have this next book ready to go as soon as possible and I need something to keep me on track.

So, why do you care? Other than because you’re good, kind, people who all graciously support me with your awesomeness? Well, ’cause if you’ve read THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING, then you know what book I’m writing now…and here’s a hint:

Thanks to all of you who participated – this was so fun for me!  I hoped we’d get more, but I always want more, I’m greedy that way.

In the meantime, less is good for those of you that entered! 😉 We did not get to 15 entries, so there will be only one winner today. Below are all the entries I received (in random order)…and the winner (drawn at random as per the rules) is at the bottom!

Our first entry is from Jessie Dawn and you can find her at both these links!

Second entry is from Natacha Bustos!

Ross Campbell Lola and Bonnie Heads

For those of you who can draw (even just a little) – I’m going to run a THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING FAN ART CONTEST.

Grand Prize: a copy of the signed hardcover illustrated first edition of THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING with an original sketch inside by yours truly. Winner will also receive the mysterious “blue envelope,” 3 oversized postcards, 3 bookmarks, both flat bendable TGWWBK magnets, 4 stickers, AND a limited edition 8×10 signed and numbered first edition print of either Ross Campbell’s Bonnie Braverman or Lola LeFever heads (limited to only five ever!). (Your choice if you want Bonnie or Lola). Value of this prize is over $100!!!

Rules are simple.

Email me your TGWWBK related entry (jpgs only please) –  to: 1979semifinalist[at]gmail[dot]com

BEFORE midnight PST on January 31st, 2013.

Check out the current fan art already up and the website in general for inspiration! Anything TGWWBK related is fair game (i.e. you don’t HAVE to draw Bonnie and/or Lola). Do try to avoid spoilers however!

Winner will be drawn at random from all entrants on February 1st, 2013.  Winners will be notified on the blog and emailed. International entries are welcome.

If we get enough entries (let’s say, 15 or more) then I will give away TWO grand prizes. One to a winner drawn at random, and one to my favorite of the entries (note: “favorite” winner will then not be included in the random drawing.)

Put your questions (etc.) in the comments or email them to me. All entries, including the winners will be posted both on this blog and on TGWWBK Fan Art Page indefinitely. *I reserve the right of course to NOT post your entry if it’s offensive (or something – basically, don’t be a jerk).

NOW GO DRAW!!!!

Got another great piece for the THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING Fan Art page, this one from The Literary Bandit of Lola LeFever, and it comes with this lovely comment about Lola:

“I have a soft spot for a well done super villain. Lola, here, is the best I’ve come across in years.”

That makes me grin like you have no idea. I too believe a “hero” is only as good as their “villain” and though I try not to put Lola in the “villain” box, it’s obvious that she checks a lot of those boxes (sometimes with glee) and I take great pride in the fact that Lola is at least –some would argue more— developed in TGWWBK as Bonnie is.

Many –in fact MOST– people that read TGWWBK love Lola. Well, people who aren’t called MY MOTHER. 😉

Buy your copy today and find out what’s so great about Lola LeFever. Also available on Amazon!
