Awesome Meredith McClaren Lola and Bonnie “itty” magnets that all the $50 and up people will be receiving. LOVE THEM!

Hey, kids!

Just a little update about THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING reviews and news and such.

First up, it looks like, thanks to my badass printers, the print editions may get to me by the end of the month! This is much faster than expected and I hope it works out so I can get this out to all of you as quickly as possible! Fingers crossed!

Secondly, I finally got THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING up on iBook.  Barnes & Noble is up next and is already in process…hopefully it will go live this week.  One word of caution – on iBooks it’s linking TGWWBK to another book by a different Kelly Thompson – this is NOT my book.

The reviews continue to come in and they are AWESOME. Here are two from independent blogs (and if you write a review on your blog make sure to send it in so that I can link to you!):

First up is Lewis Smith’s review from WITLESS PRATTLE who has said some of my favorite things ever about the book. It’s a great read!

Also up is this sweet review from Jessica Anderson.

And here are some badass excerpts from things people have said at Amazon US, Amazon UK, and Goodreads – I honestly could not ask for more wonderful feedback – THANK YOU EVERYONE – and, because I’m greedy – KEEP THEM COMING! :)

“The writing is electric, relying on colorful imagery and breakneck pacing that brings to mind comic panels fed into a HD film projector … The whole thing comes off like if Neil Gaiman and Brian Michael Bendis had locked themselves in a cellar to determine what made superheroes great and what made a great superheroine and launched their results from a trebuchet at the internet.” – January Hooper, 5 Star Review, Amazon

“What a great book. Curveball of an ending, but a must read if you are at all interested in superhero stories. the narrative voice fits the characters so well, it is brilliantly self aware of its genre, and it just sweeps you right up into these two extraordinary girls’ lives. TGWWBK is a force to be reckoned with, and I cant wait to see more of Kelly Thompson’s work.” – Rachael Stephen, 5 Star Review, Amazon (UK)

“A Masterpiece of Classic Fiction and Comic-book Hero/Villain duality.” – Grant Hayward, 5 Star Review, Amazon

“Smart and grown up!” – Lauren Las, 5 Star Review, Amazon

“Once I started reading, I couldn’t put it down.” – Megan S., 5 Star Review, Amazon

If you like strong female leads and non-stop action, this is definitely for you.” – L. Cappelli, 5 Star Review, Amazon

“[TGWWBK] was everything I needed in a good book. It has it all. Adventure, mystery, and great characters. I fell in love with both Bonnie and Lola. Their Stories are both compelling and heart wrenching … a week later I still can’t stop thinking about this book.” – Lisa Higgins, 4 Star Review, Amazon

“[TGWWBK] is a totally original concept, and without giving anything specific away about the ending, this could EASILY be the first book in a series (although I would settle for a sequel). However, traditional publishers thought that we needed another vampire romance or dystopian trilogy more than we needed this book. I strongly disagree, and I suspect you will too. I highly recommend this book for mature teens, fans of strong female characters, comic book enthusiasts, and anyone who enjoys solid YA lit that doesn’t follow all the rules.” – Jessica, 5 Star Review, Goodreads

YOU GUYS ARE AMAZING! :)

I think all of us that dabble in comics know how awesome the idea of “fan art” and “reinterpreting characters” is, so with that in mind I commissioned the fantastic Meredith McClaren to do portraits of Bonnie and Lola for me.  These are of course going to look different than Stephanie’s interpretations – and Ross’s – but that’s part of what I love about them.  You saw a Bonnie by Meredith a couple days ago, but here is her Lola, which I LOVE.  And I think it’s an awesome contrast to Stephanie’s “Lola and bike” – both beautiful, both different, both so much of what I love about Lola (and this book).

So huge thanks to Meredith! Oh, and when the store opens on TheGirlWhoWouldBeKing.com to sell all the extra swag from the Kickstarter, there will be both oversized promotional cards and bookmarks to buy of this version of Lola.  BE EXCITED!  😉

Last thing! Some of you are putting up amazing reviews on both Amazon and Goodreads.  Thank you SO MUCH.  And for those of you that have finished reading and not yet reviewed…what’s stopping you!? And if you haven’t even bought it yet…then REALLY what’s stopping you? Get it now! :)

Thanks everyone for the support – you’re all awesome.

This one I commissioned from the sublime Meredith McClaren and it’s from an early scene with Bonnie.  Funnily enough, this was a scene I never liked the ending to, and which I rewrote at the last moment when I was posting pages during the Kickstarter.  It was a rewrite that really made the scene work – and then I got this amazing image of it from Meredith! EVERYONE WINS!

Enjoy.

If you don’t already have the book – buy! buy! buy!

If you’ve already read the book – review! review! review!

Thanks everyone!

I’ve been meaning to post about this very cool event MIX 2012 sponsored by Columbus College of Art & Design for a long while now, but have been so swamped that now I look at my calendar and it is upon us!

So it’s terribly late notice for those of you not in the area, but if you are in the area, you really should consider attending this amazing new event organized by the Columbus College of Art & Design and featuring two days of symposiums, a 24-hour comics marathon, and an exhibition.  The schedule looks great, and when Chris Ware is your keynote speaker, you know you’ve done something right!

It’s held at the Columbus College of Art & Design campus and begins on October 3rd and runs through October 6th. You can get all the details at the link and if you’re in the area, you should definitely head over there!

So it’s pretty much ALWAYS awesome to be friends with Ross, but sometimes he really pulls out ALL the goddamn stops.

Some of you that frequent the blog regularly may remember this post, in which I talked a bit about some projects I was working on and wanted to work on, and one in particular that I conceived as a television show, but realizing nobody was going to let little ole me do a TV show, turned it into a novel. It’s the novel I wrote for this NaNo last November (you may remember my daily posts on that as well).

Tessa Battle and her axe The Black Dove by Kelly Thompson

Anyway, the sketch above was a quick little sketch that I did of the main character Tessa a long ways back.

Ross, who read the novel a few months back, for my birthday did the MOST GORGEOUS DRAWING EVER of Tessa.

Tessa Battle and her axe The Black Dove by Ross Campbell (and Kelly Thompson)

I am just in heaven over this. I have to tell you guys, ever since I started wanting to do comics as a teenager I always used to want to write and draw my own comics and graphic novels, but over the last six months, working with Stephanie, Ross, and Meredith (as well as a few other wonderful artists here and there) has made me realize how much I would rather have someone else fall in love with something of mine and breath their own life into it. It’s so damn rewarding I can barely describe it. Especially when I’ve been lucky enough to work with these insanely talented people.

So…THANK YOU ROSS. YOU ARE AN ULTIMATE BADASS OF THE HIGHEST ORDER.

(Even Tessa says so).

Big news this week, as the book Chicks Dig Comics, which I was lucky enough to be a part of, released this week.

You can buy it online at Amazon & B&N and it should be available in some comic book stores as well.

My piece called “I am Sisyphus and I am Happy” is about how I came to comics, how I came to writing about comics, and specifically how She Has No Head! came to be. It’s a deeply personal piece, and I hope you all enjoy it. I am sandwiched in there with SO MANY amazing ladies including Gail Simone, Marjorie Liu, Amanda Conner, Carla Speed McNeil, Jen Van Meter, Colleen Doran, Jill Thompson, Jill Pantozzi, and of course, my partner in crime, SUE. And that’s just the beginning…there are plenty of other great female contributors as well as a few fantastic gents like Greg Rucka, Terry Moore, and Mark Waid.

Huge thanks to Sigrid Ellis and Lynn M. Thomas for letting me part of such a great book

I also have a new piece up at Lit Reactor that is the continued story of my path toward publication. Retweets, likes, and comments are (as always) much appreciated!

Thanks everyone for all the support!

Woo. Been very busy. Here’s some stuff I’ve been up to, please check out anything that appeals to you! :)

I wrote about The Hunger Games for Lit Reactor. It went up yesterday and it’s a “Book vs. Film” piece…so you just know that’s going to be fun!

Oh yeah, I reviewed some book you guys might have heard about – Avengers vs. X-Men #1 — for CBR, it’s up now.

I wrote a review last week for CBR for The New Deadwardians #1, which was excellent, and I urge you to check out the book.

I also wrote a review for Daredevil #10, which if you’re not on board with already, you should get on now! Very good stuff.

I was a guest on the excellent Hideous Energy podcast last week to talk more about Wonder Woman #7 and a bunch of other awesome (and not awesome) things – it’s one of my favorite podcasts yet – so please give a listen!

All of you know how I love (and hate) comic book covers, so if you haven’t already, make sure to check out this week’s She Has No Head! which features 25 of the best superheroine comic covers of the past year.

OH! And I got this 100 kinds of awesome nomination from Hooded Utilitarian for “Best Online Comics Criticism for 2012”…I’m pretty much in there among giants, so it’s just an honor to be mentioned in the same post with them.

I’ve mentioned before that I have an essay called “I am Sisyphus, and I am Happy” in the new book Chicks Dig Comics from Mad Norwegian Press, a certain 3 Chicks Review Comics co-host also has a piece in the book and we are sandwiched in there with some truly epic people including Gail Simone, Jill Thompson, Colleen Doran, Marjorie Liu, Greg Rucka, Mark Waid, Jen Van Meter, Carla Speed McNeil, Terry Moore, Jill Pantozzi, and so many more! So check that out if you haven’t already – it releases on April 10th.

Oh, and a new Audioshocker “Podcast with Ross & Nick” is up – I chat with Nick and Ross about “continuous on-tap properties” and fans reactions to them.

And of COURSE you all have your copies of Womanthology, right?!

So I’ve got a nice fun and light new piece up on She Has No Head! this week called 25 Great Superheroine Covers Of The Past Year. It was originally intended to be a companion piece to my 25 Great Superheroine Moments in honor of Women’s History Month. But then the whole Wonder Woman #7 thing happened and well…you all know.

Anyway, so head on over for this late addition to Women’s History month!

A new She Has No Head! is up…a list of 25 Great Superherione Moments.  Inspired by Sue’s new Tumblr – THIS! – I compiled some of my favorite goose bump inducing moments for women in superhero comics. Enjoy!

You know what definitely made the list?  THIS!
