Last week’s Cover(s) of the Week are a tie between Buffy & Batwoman (don’t tell DC Women Kicking Ass…she’ll be mad!)

First up, Steve Morris’ truly excellent Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Season Nine #5.  Look at those colors, absolutely fantastic.  Love the text integration as well, so smart:

And then there’s Batwoman #5 by J.H. Williams III.  Absolutely stunning – and as I discussed when it came up in Drunk Cover Solicits a few months ago, there’s so much more there than meets the eye at first glance.  It’s beautiful if you don’t look deep, but if you take the time, it’s incredibly complex and interesting.  Actually, I’d say that about both these covers.  Excellent work gents.

I’m not going to do a post for Panel Of The Week for last week (too busy/tired/lazy) but this definitely would have been one of the picks, also from Batwoman #5 and J.H. Williams:

I bitch and moan (fairly regularly) during Drunk Cover Solicits about being tired of “split face” covers where a comic character’s face is split down the middle. I think I even said recently that I was officially over those kind of covers.

Well, sometimes it’s damn good to be wrong.  Check out this dynamic completely badass Ross Campbell Glory #24 cover (which is issue #2 since its “re-start”).  “Split face” and all, it’s awesome.

Easy pick this week if only because my pull list was so slim.  So an easy win for iZombie #10 by Mike Allred.

Bonus points for it being based on/inspired by this fantastic photograph as commenter JRSM pointed out a few months ago on Cover Solicits.

Fables #101 came close to taking it this week but this Uncanny X-Men #4 cover by Esad Ribic is just too cool not to win.  It’s not PERFECT, but it’s very interesting to me with the shapes and movement and composition.  It also manages to, despite being a style that looks very stiff and slick to me, have great movement and energy thanks to the composition and patterns.

Ross made a comment a while back in cover solicits that this cover would be even better if Psylocke’s skin was lighter here because it would further re-inforce the pale colors and dark patterned shapes – and I agree – but it’s still very cool.

All these covers are pretty interesting actually, but this is my favorite that we’ve seen so far.

So I’ve been working on an exciting two part post for She Has No Head! over the last month, and in the process it had me thinking a lot about comics covers – which is saying a lot as I already think about comic covers quite a bit thanks to my monthly Cover Solicits In Three Sentences Or Less posts.  But int the spirit of “Panel Of The Week” and trying to be more positive and find more things I love about comics (ah, why does only the hate come so easy!?) I’ve decided to do a best cover of the week as well.  I’m basing this, like Panel Of The Week, solely on comics I buy…so it’s entirely possible that there will be another better cover (even in my eyes) for the week…but if that book didn’t rate a buy I’m not going to consider it eligible.  This may be a bit unfair…but hey, I make the rules…and there are so few instances in which I get to say that in life…that I’m just going to revel in it.  :)

So welcome to our first ever, Cover Of The Week on 1979 Semi-Finalist.

And right off the bat I’m going to set a terrible precedent and give cover of the week to two covers…

MORNING GLORIES #2

Morning Glories has been selling out like crazy and I have to say…it deserves it.  It’s a pretty good book so far.  It’s smart and has some nice unexpected twists and turns.  The characters are kind of designed to be stereotypes, but then twist nicely and subvert some of those ideas.  Additionally, while I love some long slow drawn out deconstructed comics…this is moving at a breakneck pace (but not too fast that they’re screwing it up) and it’s kind of refreshing.  A TON has happened already and both issues have ended on fairly awesome cliffhangers.  It would be great if the interior art was better and more consistent, but it’s good enough to not get in the way.  Also, this cover rocks.

DV8: GODS & MONSTERS #6.

Ironically, though all of Fiona Staples covers for DV8: Gods & Monsters have been outstanding, this is probably my least (or second least) favorite of the bunch and yet it’s still awesome enough to get cover of the week.  Fiona has been doing an amazing job and this excellent graphic representation, which nicely reflects what’s going on in the book (and has the lovely white space I so crave) is a home run.

In the depths of my sadness for the departed GAME OF THRONES and the interminable year I must wait for its return, I wanted to do something fun. I did a little something fun the other day, but that wasn’t enough. Then when doing my latest “DRUNK COVER SOLICITS” I was struck with genius (as the drunk frequently think they are) – why not talk about Game of Thrones while drunk?

GENIUS.

So here we are.

BEFORE WE EVEN GET STARTED…! This is full of spoilers for the TV show only. If you are not caught up through the end of Season 3, do not enter! Save yourself! If you have read the books, GREAT FOR YOU, but please don’t spoil anything for those of us that have not done so yet. Questions asked are HYPOTHETICAL/FOR COMEDIC VALUE ONLY, do not, I repeat DO NOT attempt to answer them in the comments! Whew. Okay. Also, if you’re not familiar already with “Drunk Cover Solicits” you should know that the whole “Three Sentences Thing” is a random guideline that I constantly break.

Because all these people (I totally think they’re real, can you tell?) are connected in such awesomely complex ways, I was forced to categorize them in the style of Los Angeles Real Estate. In other words they are grouped by their houses, and then “house adjacent.” Like when you live in the depths of North Hollywood and you try to call it “Studio City Adjacent”…listen, we all know where you live. Nice try.

And I know this, because I lived in North Hollywood. So, yeah, been there!

Here we go!

HOUSE LANNISTER & HOUSE LANNISTER ADJACENT:

TYWINN LANNISTER

How can he not scare you? Tyrion and Cersi are like the ultimate badasses of Westeros and yet they look like they’re pissing down their damn legs when he’s in the room. Yet, in the brilliance that is GoT, it’s impossible not to respect and even admire him in some ways (see: all his interactions with Arya in Season 2).

DAMN YOU THRONES!

sidenote: shit, we’re already at some all caps levels…this does not bode well…

JAMIE LANNISTER aka THE KING SLAYER

Oh how far we have come from me thinking that attempting to murder a child by pushing him out of a tower made someone a monster. You are a KITTEN in comparison to some of these other bastards. Also, I kinda love you (and thus hate myself).

CERSI LANNISTER

I want to hate you so badly, but you’re so deliciously complex. Evil and yet I keep hoping against hope that you and Tyrion will band together…or at least hug.

CAN YOU PLEASE JUST HUG EACH OTHER?!?

TYRION LANNISTER aka MY FAVORITE!

I love you. Is there a better character alive than you? You (like Dany) are almost TOO perfect. But please do not take that as an endorsement to begin fucking up.

ps. I love you. Oh wait, I already said that.

pps. I’m not following you, promise!  That weird girl behind the fancy drapes was not me, swearsies.

ppps. But if it WAS me, what did you think? Was I cute? Were you flattered?

SHAE

You in danger, girl. GTFO!

BRONN

Not much for you to do this season, but I like your ‘Truth To Power’ style. Keep it up, yo.

PODRICK “WHORES PAY TO FUCK HIM” PAYNE

WHAT IS YOUR SECRET?  TELLLL MEEEEEE!

KING JOFFREY BARATHEON (BUT REALLY LANNISTER) aka KING DOUCHEBAG aka KING SOCIOPATH aka FICTION CHARACTER I MOST WANT TO MURDER aka EVERYONE WANTS TO KICK YOU IN THE GODDAMN FACE, KID

What is wrong with you??? I mean, seriously. Like your mom and dad are twins, okay, fine, that gets you a certain amount of leeway. But nobody gets THIS MUCH LEEWAY.

You want to present Sansa’s brother’s head to her? Really? In what universe EVEN THE THRONES UNIVERSE! is that appropriate. Here’s the answer…NONE.

Sidenote: this poor actor is never getting another job in Hollywood that’s not a villain…save your sheckles, kid.

SANDORE CLEGANE aka “THE HOUND”

Give him a break already, Arya. Seriously. Dude is not perfect (this is GAME OF THRONES!) but he has seriously done no wrong to you, except that which he was ordered to (which, arguably was horrible and scarring, but again, THRONES).

ROS

Poor fucking Ros. I actually got attached. What a rookie. I thought we were building to you getting to do something beyond being tortured and killed by KING ASSFACE. I promise, no matter how he MIGHT trick me with good deeds in the future (and this is THRONES so he totally will, it’s part of what makes it so GOOD) I will never forgive Little DICK for sealing your horrible fate.

VARYS

You seem like a survivor. But I have learned my lesson with Ros. I will not get attached. I WILL not get attached.

PETYR BAELISH aka LITTLE FINGER

You unbelievable dick. I never trusted you, I never liked you (even though my friend kind of does! what?!) but I was willing to see where you went, what you did. You were interesting. NOW YOU ARE ON THE SHIT LIST WITH THE OTHER UNFORGIVABLES. Good job, sir, good job!

So, apologies are in order for how dark the blog has been.  There has been a ton going on for me, both good and bad, though in general I have to say that December was a hell of a good month – as I got all the Kickstarter packages out (a herculean task), picked up a wonderful new agent, got back great notes for my new book (unrelated to TGWWBK), have had strong sales for TGWWBK both via Amazon (etc.) and on my own store, have gotten AMAZING feedback on TGWWBK (and what comes next – hint hint!), and have not completely run out of money to live!

BONUS!

Still, I’ve been painfully neglecting the blog, at a time when I SHOULD be doing just the opposite. SO, with that said, expect more posts. I’m going to get back to cross posting my work here so that those of you who subscribe to the feed but aren’t on twitter can follow me more easily throughout the web and I’m doing my best to generate new 1979 content as well. To start us off I’m planning on getting completely hammered tonight and doing a double dose of Marvel and DC Drunk Cover solicits, which I’ll roll out over the next few two days. So, thanks for hanging in there, and hopefully you will be rewarded with lots of fun posts and maybe some other interesting tidbits in the coming weeks and months! :)

Hey, kids!

So I’ve been really sick, which is why you got no 3 Chicks and no She Has No Head! today. But I hope to be back with a new column next week, and 3 Chicks will be back soon as well.

In the meantime, here are some things I did prior to getting sick (and while sick). Enjoy!

Last week for She Has No Head! I wrote about the Avengers and the superheroine movies I’d like to see now that Joss Whedon has shown me that superheroines can be done right on the big screen. I even casted them – what more could you want?

I also put up a detailed Joss Whedon piece on Lit Reactor last week called “Can Joss Whedon Save The Superheroine?”

If you have any interest in writing, catch up on my Long & Winding Road pieces over on Lit Reactor, because Part III goes up next week!

I also participated in a Wonder Woman Roundtable over at Hooded Utilitarian. There are some amazing pieces up there, and here’s mine (which is less amazing): Wonder Woman: It’s In Her DNA (although Adam correctly pointed out that I should have called it “Wonder Woman makes a nice foot cushion”  I’m thinking of renaming my entire site that.

I only did two reviews for CBR last week thanks to illness but here they are in case you missed them:

The Walking Dead #97

Uncanny X-Force #25

Also, if you haven’t picked up Womanthology or Chicks Dig Comics yet (both of which I’m in!) then you should do that now. Greg Burgas has a nice review up of Womanthology…Greg doesn’t pull punches so you know he’s being straight with you. I’ve rarely been mentioned in the great reviews that have been coming in for Chicks Dig Comics, no real surprise there considering the company I’m in, but Tor.com mentioned my piece, which was an awesome moment.

I’m also WAY behind on Drunk Cover Solicits. But I should be able to do it this weekend…do not despair!

Also, I may be having some very cool original art to show you guys this week…so stay tuned.

Hey kids.  So here, we are, 30 days later.  I hope you all had as much success as I did.  This was an incredible month for me, because while I am exhausted (and not quite done) I absolutely destroyed my goals – cruising past 50k on Day 21, and ending up with an insane 75k+ words written this month.

And honestly…that is JUST for my novel.  I also wrote 9 comic book reviews, 2 She Has No Head! columns, 2 podcast write ups, 2 editions of Drunk Cover Solicits, an essay about Wonder Woman for the DC Women Kicking Ass Kick Ass Contest, and a slew of other smaller posts for 1979.  That, altogether has got to be at least 15k – 20k, easy.  So that means I wrote nearly 100k this month…outside of my full time job. Insane. Now, I will say that my personal life has been a sad little husk of a thing…so I don’t think this is a healthy way to live…but, it can still be a good guideline of how much I am really capable of when I put my mind to it…and could perhaps help me figure out what a reasonable goal would be for a more ongoing basis.

Thanks to all of you that encouraged me, and I hope for those of you that took on NaNo yourselves (officially, or unofficially as I did) are happy with your successes and failures.  If I’ve learned anything it’s that it’s all a process.  I know for a fact some of you out there just killed it…but for others, there’s always next time, and even if you didn’t meet 50k, you’re still X number of words beyond where you were four short weeks ago…so just keep going.

Anyway, for posterity’s sake, I’ll put up a post when I hit “the end” on this puppy (shooting for Saturday) so that those of you that have been playing along can feel closure too. :) But for now, here are the final counts…

Today’s word count: 2,943

MS total word count:  110,495

Total NaNo word count: 75,995
