As I said last week I’m going to try to get back to doing a better job of cross-posting my content across the web here, so here are the reviews I did for CBR this week, enjoy!

ALL-NEW X-MEN #5

“Against all odds, in large part due to the A-list creative team of Brian Michael Bendis and Stuart Immonen, the very weird idea at the center of the “All-New X-Men” series is working like gangbusters five issues in. This issue, as the cover suggests, spends a lot of time with young Jean Grey as she deals with her future death(s). It’s handled quite well — and erases all of my concerns in issue #2 that the series would gloss over these kind of complications….”

PUNK ROCK JESUS #6

“Sean Murphy’s “Punk Rock Jesus” has been an incredible ride and it certainly doesn’t stop with this final issue. A clever idea that could have easily gone awry, Murphy’s story of a clone of Jesus Christ raised in the public eye was constantly unpredictable, almost always in a good way….”

DELPHINE (COLLECTED HARDCOVER)

“Richard Sala’s beautifully illustrated “Delphine,” an extremely loose reinterpretation of “Snow White” told from the perspective of the unnamed (and more modern) “Prince Charming,” is delightfully dark and mysterious. One part comic book and one part fever dream, there’s a lot to like in this hardback collected edition from Fantagraphics….”

Got another great piece for the THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING Fan Art page, this one from The Literary Bandit of Lola LeFever, and it comes with this lovely comment about Lola:

“I have a soft spot for a well done super villain. Lola, here, is the best I’ve come across in years.”

That makes me grin like you have no idea. I too believe a “hero” is only as good as their “villain” and though I try not to put Lola in the “villain” box, it’s obvious that she checks a lot of those boxes (sometimes with glee) and I take great pride in the fact that Lola is at least –some would argue more— developed in TGWWBK as Bonnie is.

Many –in fact MOST– people that read TGWWBK love Lola. Well, people who aren’t called MY MOTHER. 😉

Buy your copy today and find out what’s so great about Lola LeFever. Also available on Amazon!

So I already gave you guys some DC Drunk Solicits to help ring in the New Year (look for Marvel to show up on January 1st – it’s the way to start the year off right! Or at least help you nurse that hangover).

I also already gave you my comics Best and Worsts for 2012 over on She Has No Head!

And I promised to stop ignoring the blog…so what else is there to say?

Well, I’d love to give some love to all those people that have been so supportive of TGWWBK over the past months. First and foremost to those awesome folks that gave me awards. You people rock especially hard:

James Whatley over at WhatleyDude says THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING is one of the three best books he read this year. YES!

James and Brandon over at the awesome Comics! The Blog give THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING “Best Novel Our Friend Published”

And Seeley James gives THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING “Most Innovative Thriller for 2012”

All high praise indeed…even if I was possibly the only nominee in James and Brandon’s category! 😉

You can check out excerpts from all sorts of reviews on the updated TGWWBK website, including perhaps my favorite quote ever “… Lola is a hungry conqueror, claiming her title by force and seeking out further fortune like a would-be Ghengis Kahn in a catsuit.” (courtesy of January Hooper on Amazon).

I’ve also started up a TGWWBK Fan Art Page which already has some gorgeous submissions (submit directly to me at: 1979semifinalist[at]gmail[dot]com) to get yours up on the website. :)

Of course there’s also the store, where you can buy limited edition hardcovers, all sorts of swag, limited edition prints, and even the mysterious “blue envelope.”  If you prefer the ease of Amazon you can buy a digital version there, or a paperback edition there. You can also get the paperback version on Lulu (I actually think it’s a bit superior in quality to the Amazon version even though the thumbnail on Lulu is really blown out and saturated for some reason).

OH, and TGWWBK finally has a Facebook page. Please check it out and like/follow/whatever to keep up with all the news that’s fit to print…er…type.

What else?  I’m still writing for Lit Reactor, doing reviews for CBR, and of course doing She Has No Head! for CSBG. 3 Chicks is still ongoing of course (in fact, our big “end of the year” episode full of bests and worsts will go up on Monday).  I’ve also picked up another freelance gig doing comics reviews for Publishers Weekly, so I’m a busy busy girl. There has been some development on my first comic book mini-series (Heart In A Box) but nothing solid yet. Cross ’em if you got ’em!

Perhaps most important and relevant for 2012 is that I got a new agent and I feel really lucky that I was able to leave an agent and also get a new one within the same year. My new agent is amazing and I’m working on revisions to my new book (unrelated to TGWWBK) now, so stay tuned for development there. I’m still out of work, but I feel like the universe is actually taking pretty good care of me right now…thanks in large part to all of you. SO THANK YOU.

So I’m off to eat a bunch of cheese and crackers and probably some fruit, and drink far too much Veuve as I ring in the New Year, so Happy New Year to you all and here’s to an even better 2013 – for all of us!

May all of our days in 2013 be filled with the three C’s. COMICS. CAKE. & CHAMPAGNE. Gods, wouldn’t that be AMAZING?

A new She Has No Head! is up.  That’s right, kids, it’s my “Bests (and a few worsts) of 2012”

Head on over to check it out.  And here’s a hint…it’s Hawkeye/Saga-rific!  :)

So, apologies are in order for how dark the blog has been.  There has been a ton going on for me, both good and bad, though in general I have to say that December was a hell of a good month – as I got all the Kickstarter packages out (a herculean task), picked up a wonderful new agent, got back great notes for my new book (unrelated to TGWWBK), have had strong sales for TGWWBK both via Amazon (etc.) and on my own store, have gotten AMAZING feedback on TGWWBK (and what comes next – hint hint!), and have not completely run out of money to live!

BONUS!

Still, I’ve been painfully neglecting the blog, at a time when I SHOULD be doing just the opposite. SO, with that said, expect more posts. I’m going to get back to cross posting my work here so that those of you who subscribe to the feed but aren’t on twitter can follow me more easily throughout the web and I’m doing my best to generate new 1979 content as well. To start us off I’m planning on getting completely hammered tonight and doing a double dose of Marvel and DC Drunk Cover solicits, which I’ll roll out over the next few two days. So, thanks for hanging in there, and hopefully you will be rewarded with lots of fun posts and maybe some other interesting tidbits in the coming weeks and months! :)

Lola and Bonnie by Emily Carroll

I’ve finally got the The Girl Who Would Be King FAN ART section up on the website.

There are a few awesome pieces up already thanks to the brilliant Emily Carroll, a pair of sketches I commissioned from Kaylie McDougal, and absolutely awesome reader Rachael Stephen (@mythicflux).

As a comic fan I’m also a huge fan of seeing artist interpretations of characters, so I encourage any of you that read and liked the book to send in your submissions.

You can submit directly to me at: 1979semifinalist[at]gmail[dot]com

Let’s go! :)

Bonnie vs Lola #2 by Stephanie Hans

Head on over to THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING STORE to get limited edition signed copies of the illustrated book, and plenty of swag including “the blue envelope” and VERY limited edition signed prints.

You can also buy the paperback on either Amazon or Lulu (for what it’s worth the Lulu copy is slightly superior in my opinion – even though the jpg color is off on the site).

And of course the digital copy remains on sale at Amazon (for the crazy low price of $2.99).

And as always, thanks for all the reviews and support guys, you’ve been awesome.

So why write about superheroes as prose when they’re so visual?

Those who were familiar with me before I published THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING are less curious since they know about my love of comics, and superheroes specifically. They also know I crave strong and complicated women in my fiction, I can’t get enough of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, and love nothing more than sassy chicks that kick a lot of ass (hence, Buffy!), but even those familiar with my affection for these things sometimes wonder why I chose to write about superheroes as prose, instead of comics.

And the answer is simply this…I didn’t.

When I began THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING (way back in 2004) I started writing it as a screenplay.  Now, that’s still not a comic, but films are obviously great places for excellent visual action and for good or ill, a lot of superhero movies have been made — certainly there was a lot more than I had seen of superhero prose in 2004.  But as I tried to write this screenplay (I had written one before, it was terrible) I kept finding myself wanting to go deeper into the characters heads. To explore them more fully than I though I could in either film or comics. Now, thinking I couldn’t do that in those other mediums may have just been my lack of experience, but the end result was that I decided to try my hand at writing my superheroes as prose…and thus my first novel was born.

I had a lot of doubts over the years (even more than I had version of the book – which is saying a lot) – but when all was said and done I was really happy with my decision to delve so deeply into my heroes as prose. And once the book was done I found myself fantasizing about someday adapting it not only into a film (circle of life and all that) but possibly into a comic book. It intrigued me to almost go backwards, starting with a comic book idea, but executed in prose, and then taking it back to its more natural roots. It’s something I would love to try someday.

The added benefit is that while I spend a ton of my life trying to talk about women in comics, and getting more women to read comics, and understand how wonderful they can be, I love even more the idea that a lot of women and girls might love TGWWBK as a novel and then come along to read an adaptation of it, and thus discover comics.

That’s dreaming big at this point I suppose, but it’s certainly a place I’d like to go…and to have others follow me. You know one of the things that made doing TGWWBK as a comic book some day feel like a reality? All the amazing artists that helped make the book what it is – cover and interior illustrations artist Stephanie Hans, as well as comics creators Ross Campbell and Meredith McClaren.

Their work is too inspiring not to get any writer’s mind fantasizing about what might be next…

So some things are going on with my job – hello unemployment :( – and so I need to concentrate on the revision my current project needs, instead of getting another one done. Thus, with a heavy heart, I have to stop with Pariahs and move back to this project, getting it finished up so I can start trying to proactively get a new agent.

Also, for those of you that got TGWWBK packages at the $50 and up level (or will be getting them soon) you know thanks to the secret blue envelope that I’ve got a lot of other things to work on too!

So here’s a final image from Pariahs. So sad. I will finish you one day, book!
