Ah, a wild imagination.  A gift AND a curse I say…

Yes, the beginning of the actual “serial strip”…I can’t believe it either.

I hope you all had a good weekend.  It was Adam’s birthday this weekend so I took him out to dinner on Saturday night to Pearl Oyster Bar downtown which was an awesome success (and as a special bonus I had a fabulous Lobster Roll – yay!).  We also went to see a movie that he liked and I loved called Reprise.  It’s a Danish film (well actually it’s set in Oslo, but the director is Danish, so I’m going to stick with Danish).  Nevermind, I just looked it up and it is a Norwegian film, though the director is Danish.  Anyway, it was wonderful.  We also watched a fascinating documentary called Deep Water about the 1969 Sailing Race Around the World – the first ever attempt for a single sailor to sail the world without stopping. The documentary is focused on the sad and shocking tale of Crowhurst, the dark horse English competitor.  The documentary was in no way perfect, but the subject matter was completely riveting.  That was about it, except for cleaning the house and waiting around for pieces of Adam’s birthday present (a new computer) to arrive.

How did I not know about this!?! Proof that the internet is a big big place and that I don’t have enough free time on my hands if you ask me. If you’re into Superheroes, Design, Art, Fashion, or especially all of the above, head on over to to Project: Rooftop.

It’s a great idea, inspired by things like Project Runway; the (semi-recent) Batgirl Meme; and all sorts of great things that run wild on the internet in regards to art and superheroes. It reminds me of Illustration Friday in that it plays on that same creative internet spirit that unites and actually evens the playing field for artists both known and unknown, but it’s a little more developed and complex (read: I won’t be participating anytime soon…but maybe someday). Also there are prizes! Definitely check it out when you have a free handful of moments.

People look up some weird stuff on the interweb man.  I mean, I’m sure I’ve looked up some things that might seem bizarre to someone who didn’t know what I was looking for, but “Mila Kunis Wikipedia”?  What the hell?

Anyway, apologies to Mila for the bad representation of her here, I tried, but since it was my first time drawing her, well, she pretty much doesn’t look anything like her.

Speaking of Mila Kunis, did anyone out there see Forgetting Sarah Marshall?  Adam and I saw it with Kyle when he was in town, and I heartily recommend it.  I wasn’t expecting much, but I thought it was great.  Really funny stuff.  For my money it was definitely better than Superbad (which I didn’t love) and it was maybe even better than Knocked Up (although nothing is funnier than that scene with Paul Rudd and the chairs in Knocked Up – which used to be available on YouTube, if you want to see it again or never got the opportunity – hilarious!).  Anyway, I gave Forgetting Sarah Marshall four netflix stars.  Check it out if you haven’t yet.

Update:  Apparently there are some people that don’t even know who Mila Kunis is (ahem…Paul) so here’s a picture, so that it might jog your memory.  She is currently starring in Forgetting Sarah Marshall (as noted above) and she was also Jackie on That 70’s Show for like…100 years…

My second entry for Illustration Friday.  I missed out last week because I was ill, which was a bummer because the word was ‘Wrinkles’ and I had a great idea for it.  But, whatever, onto the next.  I really enjoyed this one.  If you haven’t checked out Illustration Friday yet, please do!

Cracked.com has a great little piece on the “Six Creepiest Comics Characters of All Time”.  I’m familiar with some of them and some of them were fun and horrible new discoveries.

All their picks are solid, but I have to SUPER agree with them on #5 Ultimate Pietro and Wanda Maximoff (Quicksilver and The Scarlet Witch)*, who are twins that are apparently now ‘in love’ with each other.  I haven’t been reading X-Men for years, and when I did they were always exceedingly close, almost slightly uncomfortably close, but now they’ve just gone and admitted that they’re in love with each other (of course they “killed” her in order to deal with the problematic and controversial storyline they got themselves into) but it was really creepy.  More creepy than that though, was The Wasp’s explanation to Captain America about it.  She explains their incestuous love as if it’s something common and even enouraged in the Twenty First Century…as if Captain America is an old fuddy duddy because he’s shocked by it.  I wonder where the writing team’s head was at when they wrote this particular page.  Check out the excerpt below…

Yikes.

*It should be noted that this version of Pietro & Wanda exists in the “Ultimate Universe”, which if you’re not familiar with the insanity (and joke) that is comics continuity, is too difficult to explain here.  Suffice to say, multiple versions of multiple characters exist in different books and worlds etc.  It’s one of the original reasons I stopped reading comics and have never really truly gone back.  Although the Ultimate Universe is generally pretty awesome, with well thought out stories and great writers and artists, taking the characters places they probably should have gone originally, I would say this storyline for Pietro & Wanda are an exception to that “awesomeness”…

Deal?  I hope so because I already spent a bunch of time culling the gems from my search terms section, and there are some gems…

As you all know, I’ve talked about my struggle in drawing myself on this blog for the Rabid Lamb strips frequently.  I’ve pretty much hit a wall in that regard, and so for awhile I’m going to be drawing myself like this:

*Objects in comic may be larger (or smaller) than they appear in real life

*Objects have been cartooned up in a happy fun way to make this more enjoyable for the artist

*Artist will be annoyed when confronted with “you don’t look like how you draw yourself in your strip” after having posted this “strip”.  Artist will not engage in a silly debate but will simply point the complainer to this “strip”…Rabid Lamb #132.

For further documentation, here is a cartoon rendering of a more accurate version of the current me:

And here is a cartoon rendering of how I FEEL these days:

Finally, in closing, please note that the artist reserves the right to change her mind at anytime and to begin drawing in whatever style she feels like on any given day…

Okay, with all the technical jargon out of our way.  Anyone have good plans for the weekend?  I had dreams of catching up on my writing and drawing, but I got a terrible sore throat last night and am now suffering severe head congestion as well as the sore throat, so basically, I’m just hoping to make it through the day at this point…

Man do I hate me some people.

I just have a really low tolerance for crowds.  I mean, I’m sure there are very few people that love crowds…maybe really young guys and girls who feel like they’re constantly on spring break?  Or the kind of people that are hoping that the larger the crowd the better variety of people to hook up with?  Hell, I don’t know.  I think most normal adults are pretty turned off by crowds.  But I confess to being not normal in that I’m so turned off by crowds I will just deliberately not do shit in order to avoid them.

Case in point, I’ve been wanting to go to MOMA for ages, and put it off in part because I knew it would be a circus.  And it was.  But it was pretty great anyway.  I wish museums were like they are on TV – where it’s just you and all this beautiful space and stunning original work on the walls that you can be alone with.  But I guess museums would be out of business if it really was that way.

Anyway, I highly recommend MOMA if you’re in New York, regardless of crowds (though I bet it is less crowd-y on weekdays in either the morning or late afternoon).

Perhaps we will have a slew of comics of actual events…rather than just shots of me watching a tv show, since my good friend Kyle is in town, and is “forcing” me to do all sorts of great stuff with him.  Between Friday night and Sunday night I went to The Natural History Museum, The Cloisters, and MOMA, spent some time in the East Village, saw a movie (Forgetting Sarah Marshall – hilarious!) and of course there were a couple great dinners and breakfasts thrown in there as well.  I literally did more in one weekend than I usually do in about three months.  Of course no writing and very very little in the way of comics got done, so this is not really a way I could live my live usually, but it was nice to get outside my head for a while.

I could still do with WAY less people though.  Everywhere we went, especially MOMA was insanely crowded.  I HATE me some crowds.  I do love me some sculpture gardens though, so it was worth it.  :)
