Okay, so I’m doing my own version of MARCH MADNESS combined with NANOWRIMO (in March)…we’re calling it Novel Madness! And it begins tomorrow! Woo!

I’m basically going to be tracking the progress of my new novel (as I did in 2011 for NaNoWriMo), and with the hopes of finishing a first strong draft of this new book within a month. See, I have a new book (unrelated to TGWWBK) that’s going out on submission to publishers via my agent very soon (that same aforementioned NaNo 2011 project), but I want to have this next book ready to go as soon as possible and I need something to keep me on track.

So, why do you care? Other than because you’re good, kind, people who all graciously support me with your awesomeness? Well, ’cause if you’ve read THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING, then you know what book I’m writing now…and here’s a hint:

Here’s some things that have been going on while I’ve been too crazy busy to blog (that all changes tomorrow though).

I wrote about the Dredd movie for Lit Reactor: 10 Reasons Why Dredd Is The Best Comic Book Movie of 2012 You DIDN’T See

I wrote about Wonder Woman the CW’s in limbo ‘Amazon’: 5 Ways Looking At Comics Can Help The CW’s ‘Amazon’

On She Has No Head! – I talked about Faith Erin Hicks collected The Adventures of Superhero Girl and “8 Great Female Led Comics You Should Be Reading.”

I wrote reviews for some really great comics: Hawkeye #8, Adventure Time #13, and Captain Marvel #10.

I wrote reviews for some pretty good comics: Powers: Bureau #1, Avengers Arena #4, and Uncanny X-Men #1.

And at least one not so great comic: Justice League of America #1.

OH. AND THERE’S A HUGE SALE GOING ON AT THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING.COM, PLUS NEW SIGNED LIMITED EDITION PRINTS AVAILABLE!

Whew.  Alright, I’ll try to stay more on top of things this month…swearsies.

A reminder that you’ve only got about 5 days left to enter THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING fan art contest!

Get all the details here.

And here’s a quick little sharpie fan art sketch I did myself to encourage you. GO! DRAW! SUBMIT! WIN! (maybe)

Ross Campbell Lola and Bonnie Heads

For those of you who can draw (even just a little) – I’m going to run a THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING FAN ART CONTEST.

Grand Prize: a copy of the signed hardcover illustrated first edition of THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING with an original sketch inside by yours truly. Winner will also receive the mysterious “blue envelope,” 3 oversized postcards, 3 bookmarks, both flat bendable TGWWBK magnets, 4 stickers, AND a limited edition 8×10 signed and numbered first edition print of either Ross Campbell’s Bonnie Braverman or Lola LeFever heads (limited to only five ever!). (Your choice if you want Bonnie or Lola). Value of this prize is over $100!!!

Rules are simple.

Email me your TGWWBK related entry (jpgs only please) –  to: 1979semifinalist[at]gmail[dot]com

BEFORE midnight PST on January 31st, 2013.

Check out the current fan art already up and the website in general for inspiration! Anything TGWWBK related is fair game (i.e. you don’t HAVE to draw Bonnie and/or Lola). Do try to avoid spoilers however!

Winner will be drawn at random from all entrants on February 1st, 2013.  Winners will be notified on the blog and emailed. International entries are welcome.

If we get enough entries (let’s say, 15 or more) then I will give away TWO grand prizes. One to a winner drawn at random, and one to my favorite of the entries (note: “favorite” winner will then not be included in the random drawing.)

Put your questions (etc.) in the comments or email them to me. All entries, including the winners will be posted both on this blog and on TGWWBK Fan Art Page indefinitely. *I reserve the right of course to NOT post your entry if it’s offensive (or something – basically, don’t be a jerk).

NOW GO DRAW!!!!

I wrote a piece about my Kickstarter Campaign for THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING on Lit Reactor. Check it out if you get a chance!

So I already gave you guys some DC Drunk Solicits to help ring in the New Year (look for Marvel to show up on January 1st – it’s the way to start the year off right! Or at least help you nurse that hangover).

I also already gave you my comics Best and Worsts for 2012 over on She Has No Head!

And I promised to stop ignoring the blog…so what else is there to say?

Well, I’d love to give some love to all those people that have been so supportive of TGWWBK over the past months. First and foremost to those awesome folks that gave me awards. You people rock especially hard:

James Whatley over at WhatleyDude says THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING is one of the three best books he read this year. YES!

James and Brandon over at the awesome Comics! The Blog give THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING “Best Novel Our Friend Published”

And Seeley James gives THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING “Most Innovative Thriller for 2012”

All high praise indeed…even if I was possibly the only nominee in James and Brandon’s category! 😉

You can check out excerpts from all sorts of reviews on the updated TGWWBK website, including perhaps my favorite quote ever “… Lola is a hungry conqueror, claiming her title by force and seeking out further fortune like a would-be Ghengis Kahn in a catsuit.” (courtesy of January Hooper on Amazon).

I’ve also started up a TGWWBK Fan Art Page which already has some gorgeous submissions (submit directly to me at: 1979semifinalist[at]gmail[dot]com) to get yours up on the website. :)

Of course there’s also the store, where you can buy limited edition hardcovers, all sorts of swag, limited edition prints, and even the mysterious “blue envelope.”  If you prefer the ease of Amazon you can buy a digital version there, or a paperback edition there. You can also get the paperback version on Lulu (I actually think it’s a bit superior in quality to the Amazon version even though the thumbnail on Lulu is really blown out and saturated for some reason).

OH, and TGWWBK finally has a Facebook page. Please check it out and like/follow/whatever to keep up with all the news that’s fit to print…er…type.

What else?  I’m still writing for Lit Reactor, doing reviews for CBR, and of course doing She Has No Head! for CSBG. 3 Chicks is still ongoing of course (in fact, our big “end of the year” episode full of bests and worsts will go up on Monday).  I’ve also picked up another freelance gig doing comics reviews for Publishers Weekly, so I’m a busy busy girl. There has been some development on my first comic book mini-series (Heart In A Box) but nothing solid yet. Cross ’em if you got ’em!

Perhaps most important and relevant for 2012 is that I got a new agent and I feel really lucky that I was able to leave an agent and also get a new one within the same year. My new agent is amazing and I’m working on revisions to my new book (unrelated to TGWWBK) now, so stay tuned for development there. I’m still out of work, but I feel like the universe is actually taking pretty good care of me right now…thanks in large part to all of you. SO THANK YOU.

So I’m off to eat a bunch of cheese and crackers and probably some fruit, and drink far too much Veuve as I ring in the New Year, so Happy New Year to you all and here’s to an even better 2013 – for all of us!

May all of our days in 2013 be filled with the three C’s. COMICS. CAKE. & CHAMPAGNE. Gods, wouldn’t that be AMAZING?

Bonnie vs Lola #2 by Stephanie Hans

Head on over to THE GIRL WHO WOULD BE KING STORE to get limited edition signed copies of the illustrated book, and plenty of swag including “the blue envelope” and VERY limited edition signed prints.

You can also buy the paperback on either Amazon or Lulu (for what it’s worth the Lulu copy is slightly superior in my opinion – even though the jpg color is off on the site).

And of course the digital copy remains on sale at Amazon (for the crazy low price of $2.99).

And as always, thanks for all the reviews and support guys, you’ve been awesome.

So some things are going on with my job – hello unemployment :( – and so I need to concentrate on the revision my current project needs, instead of getting another one done. Thus, with a heavy heart, I have to stop with Pariahs and move back to this project, getting it finished up so I can start trying to proactively get a new agent.

Also, for those of you that got TGWWBK packages at the $50 and up level (or will be getting them soon) you know thanks to the secret blue envelope that I’ve got a lot of other things to work on too!

So here’s a final image from Pariahs. So sad. I will finish you one day, book!

So. I think I just have to accept that I’m not going to get the daily counts I need on this project until I’ve finished the mailings for TGWWBK. Which is fair.  So I’m going to put less pressure on myself and focus on getting through.  I’m hoping to mail everything for TGWWBK (except a few stragglers I’m sure) before the Thanksgiving holiday, so I guess I’ll just try to push through on word count over the Thanksgiving holiday and hope I can make it. Still going to do the daily word count, and still going to keep on the writing, but going to be less pissed when I only put up 500 words…like today!

Today’s word count: 502

Today word count: 32,289
