blog-o-versary

You are currently browsing the archive for the blog-o-versary category.

In the past I’ve gone all out with celebrating…and by “all out” I mean doing a drawing (impressive, right?) but I’m so buried in Kickstarter and everything else, I just haven’t had time. So give you the GREATEST. IMAGE. EVER.

Oh, and an updated hit count: 1,326,656

WOO!!!! Since last year we didn’t quite have 900,000 that means we got nearly 430k in hits over the past 12 months. Which is pretty good, especially since I’ve been so busy with other things. And considering that the hit count for our first year was a paltry 42k.

Thanks to all of you for keeping this blog nice and vibrant. Lots of potentially interesting things in the future…promise! 😉

Remember when it was just 300,000 we were so excited about?

I cannot believe 1979 Semi-Finalist turned four years old this weekend…time, she flies my lambs.

Just wanted to drop a quick post to say thanks to all of you who have made this “whole blogging thing” so successful, both those of you who have been there from the very humble beginnings to those of you who helped to make this blog such a great success over the last year.  I didn’t have time to do an original “thank you” this year, but I thought I’d re-post the thank you from two years ago, since so many of you are new to the blog.  I hope you enjoy!

We fell short of my goal of 1 million hits, but at nearly 900,000 hits, I’m feeling pretty good about the health of the blog overall.  Drunk Cover Solicits have been particularly awesome this last year and thanks to all of you who have been reading, commenting, and promoting those, it’s much appreciated!  I’m also slowly, EVER SO SLOWLY (sometimes it’s like watching paint dry) building a twitter following so if you’re on twitter and not following me…get on it kid!

This week, in honor of the San Diego Comic Con I’ll be doing my now annual “52 Favorite Covers Of The Last 12 Months”, so be on the lookout for that.

So thanks again to all of you, here’s to another great year!

The Jilted League is The Bimbo, The Bitch, The Brain, and a blonde and if you NEED to know more about them, you can read about them here, here, and here!

A year ago I posted a list of 100 of my favorite Comic Book Covers.  But as with any list…as soon as you hit publish you can’t help but think what you’ve missed.  I’ve been thinking a lot about what I missed and regret not including that first time around, so I decided, in honor of San Diego Comic Con 2010 and the three year anniversary of this blog, to give you the “15 Covers I Wish I’d Included”.

Now, some of my second guessing came immediately after locking the list (where was Skottie Young?) others came up later and some even from discussions others were having about my list (to say some discussions were more civil than others would be a massive understatement).

The biggest legitimate complaint I heard about the list beyond certain creators being missing was that there wasn’t enough diversity – and I agree.  I don’t know if these covers will remedy that, but I think at the end of the day I’ll feel better about the list as a whole once it’s been modified.

The most interesting thing that happened while I was revising my list was the order.  I was never that convinced that even if I had the right covers that I had them in the right order, and doing these new 15 really proved that out – because when I looked through the covers I didn’t feel confident just lopping off the last 15, instead I went through and picked out all the ones I was reconsidering, and replaced them.

In keeping with the rules of the original list, I limited this list to US saddle stitched issues – so you won’t find any graphic novel, anthology, or non-US covers here.  And since comics from July 2009 to July 2010 weren’t eligible for the first attempt, I didn’t let them in this time either (but I do have a fun post for those ineligible covers coming up soon).  As was true of the original list, the revised list continues to skew hard toward X-Men, badass chicks, some nostalgia and iconic imagery.  What can I say?  We all like what we like.  :)

You can find the original 100 here, here, here, and here.

#015.

Catwoman 19.  Javier Pulido. This Pulido cover looks like Cooke to me…but it’s not (see the update below) Regardless, what sells it for me, and why I think it belongs has more to do with this being a moment I have YEARNED for in comics, and that Pulido managed to turn it into a really iconic lasting image.  The image of Batman and Catwoman, still masked, kissing on a cover is an image that will stay with me forever thanks to the iconic choices made here.

Update: I originally wrongly attributed this cover to Cooke…and honestly, if I tried 1,000 more times I’d still think it was Cooke’s work…but regardless it’s not and apologies to both Cooke and Pulido as well as to commenter Stuart that pointed out the error.

The cover it’s replacing?  #95 – Kick-Ass #1 by John Romita Jr.

This was honestly the easiest cover to remove from list as I was never entirely convinced that it belonged there in the first place and I’m not personally a huge fan of John Romita Jr.’s style.  It’s a solid cover, but does it belong on a 100 Favorites List?  Not mine.

This is an illustration I did ages ago for Illustration Friday, the word was "primative"...it seemed fitting somehow for today's post. :)

I cannot believe it has been three years!

Thanks to all of you who have made this venture so successful, both those of you who have been there from the very humble beginnings to those of you who helped to make this blog such a great success over the last year.  I didn’t have time to do a fun thank you cartoon like last year, but I’ve been pretty busy so I hope you’ll understand.

We fell just shy of my goal of 500,000 hits, but we got more than 300,000 hits this past year alone…so if you do the math on that you can see that we are building things in a huge way.  Around this time last year the blog was lucky to get 500 hits in a day, and generally averaged around the 300 mark.  Now we average around 1,000 hits a day and 1,500 is a pretty good day.  So yeah, more than tripling readership in a year is no small thing and I owe that to all of you.

I’ve got a couple really fun posts coming up.  This week, in honor of the anniversary and to head into year four with a bang I’ll be posting a “15 Covers I Wish I’d Included” post which is a follow up to the wildly popular “100 Favorite Comic Covers” of last year.  Next week, in honor of the San Diego Comic Con I’ll be doing my “52 Favorite Covers Of The Last Year” and for those of you sick of comics, in August I’ll launch a series of posts that pit my two favorite cities, LA and NYC, against each other.

So THANK YOU for reading and commenting and stay tuned…there’s much fun to come!

So we just cruised past 300,000 hits here on 1979 Semi-Finalist, and it’s kind of a big deal.  Not that 300,000 is some magical number or anything, but a mere 6 months (ish) ago, in July 2009, we celebrated the two year anniversary of this blog – and the fact that we were closing in on 150,000 hits…that’s right, in a little over six months the traffic to this blog was more than what it was in the first TWO YEARS.  And that is some mother fucking progress!

So I wanted to offer up a huge thanks to all of you that have made that happen – and to encourage you to stick with me here – as we’re only going up it seems!

Someone uncork the champagne, you all know I’ll use any excuse to drink some champagne (more accurately, an entire bottle)!

The girls have offered up their congratulations below…and maybe it’s just me, but their enthusiasm seems a little…uh, well…begrudging…if not full on sarcastic.  I mean…look at that sign!  Pitiful.

Then again, maybe they’re just punishing me for using them to continue testing out my Wacom Tablet…clearly, it’s going to take me some time to get better at using it…I may have to find some other less grouchy guinea pigs…

YAY!  Today is our two year anniversary!  YAY!

Also, we’re just about to cruise past 150,000 hits…which is awesome considering at the first anniversary we only had 42,000 hits.  Which means traffic more than doubled this year.  So the blog is definitely growing…baby step by baby step and I wanted to thank all of you for your support in making that happen.  Thanks!

Here’s a little something I made for all of you to show my appreciation. :)thank you postable
